Biden believes that a tax on violent entertainment would be a lawful and smart move to combat violence in America.
Even though there are legal precedents to discourage this course of action, should this idea gain any traction?
Explore and see why this is a terrible idea for not only the industry but the country as a whole , and why it would not work.
Jerret West is leaving Xbox at the end of the month.
Unfortunately, Xbox has not done great with marketing this generation. One thing I found odd is that he is leaving Xbox for Roblox. I'm not sure how big Roblox is in comparison to Xbox but I can't imagine him getting better compensation from there. Perhaps he was forced out?
@fr0sty Would you leave your place of employment to work somewhere else for less pay just because that business is profitable?
You would have to be a special person to be ok with that.
DivineHand125,
Not really. I don't know how much experience you have with working or how far along into your career you are, but profitability does offer an indication of how sustainable your job is. The company that is not profitable (or less profitable) is probably exploring options to cut costs, including axing jobs (we see Microsoft closing studios and really downsizing physical media operations. Valid concern in my opinion).
I doubt that's the only factor at play here and it could be any myriad of reasons why he's out: cut in compensation, not liking the direction of the company, toxic work culture, etc.
Either way, I can see a case for people leaving a job that pays better with less profitability. If you're in the marketing department and your brand isn't doing that great despite your best efforts, you probably want to coast for a while at a more profitable company.
Not saying that's reality, but I can totally see a case for that.
Marketing is not the issue at XBOX. Production and its leadership have screwed up royally. XBOX studios, wth are you doing managing these developers?!
It is both and all... the best console with the most expensive invest in marketing and the "best" developers and the best online service with the best servers... but... well... also, the worst console with a bad invest in marketing and competition using Microsoft servers for their online services and... What is Xbox now, a console, a service, a platform, a brand, a dead project? This is a marketing problem, maybe.
The problem is not the marketing, but how you invest the money in marketing. If you invest far more than the competition and receive less... the problem is the one in charge, isn't it? Well... Phil Spencer was a marketing guy, will he be the next? Unity are hiring... :)
How do you know how much each company invest in marketing and what evidence do you have to indicate Sony spends less than Xbox?
Companies in the stock exchange have to publish their data. Make some research, it is for free.
"gamescom latam, the first Latin American edition of the biggest gaming event in the world, today is thrilled to unveiled its comprehensive program of speakers, marking a monumental milestone in Latin America's gaming landscape." - Gamescom.
Exclusivity is no longer the golden goose it used to be, making the multi-platform strategy way more appealing.
Agreed. These articles are nothing but an attempt to pressure Sony PlayStation into committing seppuku by releasing their exclusives on Xbox. This is exactly what they did with all that crossplay pro-consumer propaganda campaign a few years back. And also tried when Xbox One announced DRM and always online. Why don't these journalists ever demand Nintendo to release their games on other platforms? That alone makes their malicious and dishonest intentions clear. Whenever MS manages to shoot themselves in the foot, they try to convince Sony to do it too just so the can absolve MS.
@AsimLionheart You nailed it. Unfortunately Sony has been walking into elephant traps for a while including their PC strategy. Me personally I've bought all PlayStation consoles but the PS5 I've only bought a handful of games for it compared to hundreds for each previous generation. That is a lot of money Sony lost from me as a customer while aggressively pursuing PC ports and Game Pass. I'm simply not going to fund exclusive games only for them to come to PC soon after with more features and to be pirated then for people on PC to not pay for PS+ multiplayer access either. In summary Sony have made an imbalance in their market which is taking their console users for idiots and I'm not falling for it.
I don't like Microsoft or Xbox and will never support them but my interest for Sony has started to go because of their half in and half out strategy. If you are going to fully support PC then don't be partial or vague about it. Many will stop buying your hardware and subscription services come next generation. It is simply cheaper to just pirate their games on PC, that is what happens when you don't protect paying customers. In the end I hope Sony will be happy with people leaving their consoles behind and Steam taking 30% from all their sales and the vast majority getting their games from torrent sites because expensive single player games just don't do the big numbers on PC. For those folks that are supportive of Sony's PC strategy because you don't care about consoles well you don't get those big subsidized polished games without that big console player money. If Sony continue to dilute themselves as platform holder they will have less money. You don't need a PhD in business and economics to tell you that platform holder is king.
Exactly. Competition is healthy. Sony felt safe with the PS3 and look how that affected them. Exclusives means devs will make better content for that particular console.
no exclusives means no competition to provide outstanding games. It means rehashed releases that will be up to a certain standard, and take no risks because no risks are necessary or justified.
It means, games pass, and services, and microtransactions, and parceled out gaming.
There is not really a lot of differences in the platforms as it is. Except for Nintendo who is doing their thing in the hybrid market... both Ps and XB are virtually the same. Its like Toshiba vs Panasonic for VHS VCR... both played the same tapes but one had slightly better features when it came to recording settings. Then later it was DVD players and then bluray players. all of which can play the same stuff... what sets them apart is the brand, the price and the bells and whistles.
Competition is still there. In fact, most have more than one. Maybe more if there are more people in the house.
Completely missing the point, the difference with videogames is there is a difference, games are the difference.
A whole paragraph to say nothing, thats quite an achievement
@jin
True but xbox might not be around console wise next gen this gen they have shown 0 reason to buy there console so next gen going game only would be in there wheel house.
Nintendo just hangs out back with crap hardware but alot of sales.
@light
They are tossing out new series consoles disc less versions at that they did not show off there next xbox consoles.
They would never say there done with consoles when tossing out a new model that would impact sales.
But saying its there last 2 years from now when the hype train is going for the ps6 would be the time that is just common sense.
When i said is true the only thing xbox console exclusive is there gamepass console games that is it everything else is on pc and or ps5
Nintendo survives on the strength of their first party titles, and I'm fine with that, they put out some great games. I just wish they weren't so stingy and didn't charge an arm and a leg for 5 year old games and ageing hardware.
Just_Looken,
"xbox might not be around console wise next gen"
Huh? They already announced that new hardware is coming.
"Nintendo just hangs out back with crap hardware but alot of sales."
Nintendo games are what sells their consoles; they are not just hanging out; they are dominating in unit sales & game sales. The Icon on the cake is that Nintendo games are stellar and often review, sell, and live longer than anything from Sony or MS.
Your pure dilution of facts shows how ridiculous your comment is.
When AAA games cost on average 150-200 million than there will be a lot less platform exclusives. In next 5 years many Xbox major brands will be playable on playstation and vice versa. These games are already getting released on Pc so what's another platform
Seriously some people need to get out of the console war mindset yo understand the reality of gaming buisnes in 2024 and moving forward. Spiderman 2 cost 300 million. GTA6 is rumored to cost half of billion. Halo infinite was 500 million
That halo budget was for the slpspace engine for halo games that lasted one game then that team left lol what a dam waist.
They are also tossing a billion to gta6 even though in the trailer you can see gta 5 buildings/cars/people/signs/st ores/roads even the cars act the same was it to much to give us back gta 4 physics?
The game budget is going up but the game quality does not represent that at all
Again that gta 6 trailer no weather shown no smoke from the tires no ray tracing no proper shadows shit did not look like it was ready for 2026.
So that muliplat deal is not for the game budgets as the was not a issue in the older day's when halo had more bioms coop better mp with forge or when playstaion has more exclusive on ps3 than xbox almost beat Nintendo.
Its now all about making billions of dollars a race to the next trillion dollar company greed greed though m$ is already there.
Those Spiderman 2 development costs are so bloated, I honestly can't see where they spent the money, considering they're building upon the first game and can re-use a lot of assests.
PS will not be putting their games on xbox in the next 5 yrs, let alone "many major" games. They would be EXTREMELY lucky to even get a Gaas game. You are certainly not going to see games like Spiderman 3, last of us 3, or the next God of war on xbox.
I don't think you understand the gaming business. Sony would be a fraction of it's size if all it did was sell games. The exclusive games are and always have been to keep customers glued to their PS platform. Putting then on Xbox is missing the point. They need their 30% and the monthly PS Essentials to stay in the game.
Only reason Xbox is shifting strategy is because they're losing more and more each year on the platform side.
I couldn't agree more, exclusivity isn't the issue, otherwise no one would have a reason to buy consoles (it's the reason I've only bought a Switch this gen). Its developers not reigning in their costs, the expenditure is so great and sometimes it's hard to see where they spent the money. AAA gaming developer's bad practices are causing the issues.
So dam true You think the law would step in soon show were its all going just like starwars needing over 80million for 40min episode.
Alot must be going to hookers/blow/shrooms then there pocket
Consoles are going to die. They're being kept alive by the older generations while the new generation is all about PC gaming. Stop thinking like it's 1992.... These companies have competing storefronts and services on top of first party games.... Plenty to compete over without having to drag people for another 500 dollar console that has 3 games worth of parity.
Selling consoles is not the future of determining who is "leading" the industry. The old model is dying.
Lol that's what MS wants everyone to think. If consoles are dying, why is the ps5 tracking better than than the ps4? Just because MS is getting outsold 5:1 doesn't mean consoles are dying, it means xboxs console business is dying.
Tay, you are soooo short sighted. Lol.... But you continue to do you. The writing is on the wall and this highly disappointing generation didn't help... So long consoles.... You'll be niche before long.
Actually incorrect. A big survey just posted results. Older people are more likely to be playing mobile games. The youngest generation are the biggest consumers of consoles. Mobile is still a force of course, but consoles are being used more now than ever.
Your one of those people huh. You guys have been saying this type of stuff over and over again since ps2. Like sports journalists, maybe someday it'll be right and you can say see see I told you
Paid for by your loving pro consumer Microsoft corporation. Males me sick
@jingsing
The way Sony is handling pc ports makes the most sense. Imo. They get the game later then consoles.
You obviously didn't fully read what I said did you. They can't continue to give PC users a better deal than their console customers, paying more for a lesser version of a game combined with a subscription fee for multiplayer access, That is anti consumer. If you think centering a console around getting some games a year early is a good business strategy then your are completely blinded. PC users can and will wait they always have and on top of that they won't reward Sony with lots of sales either but rather piracy due to the high prices. People like to pretend Steam somehow killed piracy, it is bigger than ever. If they are going to release multiplayer games at the same date on PS5 and PC console users get shafted again with a higher price and multiplayer access fee. Which PC users are not having to pay, explain this discrepancy?
Microsoft are also doing this but not as badly as you can buy a game on Xbox and get it on PC but they still have a gate fee in place that isn't on PC. Sorry but all this is BS. Microsoft and Sony need to explain why people on console have to magically pay for supposed server fees and people on PC don't. You can't have your cake and eat it, people will eventually wake up and it will be too late for them to change course.
If Xbox really does bow out of hardware, I wouldn't be surprised if PS gets more aggressive with keeping games off of PC, reversing direction, trying to bring more ppl to PS. That'll be their next opportunity for growth I think
Yes, lets play Gran Turismo 7 on PC and Xbox... or Demons souls remake, or FF7 Rebirth, or FF16, or Spider man 2, or Rise of the ronin, or Stellar blade, or Astros playroom, or Bloodborne, or Horizon call of mountain, or Astro bot
Lets play Zelda TOTK on PC and Xbox... or Mario Kart, Mario party, Pokemon games, Donkey kong, Kirby, Super mario games...etc
Some journalists tend to defend Microsoft decisions with illogical arguments to show us the Xbox as a competitive platform on the demand of Mr. Spencer
Xbox - literally zero exclusives, all games on PC day one. Some of them later ported to PS, Switch
Playstation - some games ported later to PC
Switch - all first party games are exclusives
Do you see the difference?
"Playstation - some games ported later to PC"
Try most of their games on PC right now.
More likely most of PC games on PS5 right now. PC started this leakage of exclusives during PS3 era with the games like Diablo 3, TES, Doom, Wolfenstein, Half life orange box etc.
Lets play GT7 on PC while i wait till the new Doom come out day one on PS5
Still a few missing but that wasn't his agreement...good job making it about something else.
Literally yrs after they have been on playstation. How long did it take the last of us to get to PC? How's that bloodborne port? Who cares if PC gamers get to play playststion games 2+ yrs after it was released on playstation. Sony isn't doing day and date and they have no plans to do so. Only games getting day and date are their gaas games.
"More likely most of PC games on PS5 right now."
Ok that's been a thing for awhile, you're deflecting. Most of Sony's games are on PC right now, these are just the facts. Fight the facts not me.
I think GT7 is one the few games that's not on PC right now. Doom is a known multiplatform game.
Yes, for me as a customer its a good thing Sony putting some of old games to PC when the games stop selling. You just act like Sony going the route MS does, you dont want to hear the truth i guess. Xbox have zero exclusives and even first party Doom coming to PS5 day one, its not multiplatform developer anymore
Most games starting from what generation? There's a lot of ps5 games and a few ps4 games...
Nobody's saying ps games aren't on pc lol wtf are you talking about. What's being disputed is it's not day and date like Xbox and alot of us don't care if pc gets a game 2 years later. Funny how the Xbox crowd is kinda in the middle with this. Hyping up exclusives from Ms but at the same time acting weird because some if not all will end up on ps. I wouldn't even care if Sony released on Xbox 2 years later. Truth is ps to me is the best place to play period.
" you dont want to hear the truth i guess."
You're talkin to the wrong person.
Idc I have both platforms. Xbox games on PC doesn't bother me I don't play PC I play them on consoles. I'm not bothered by stuff like that, like you are.
"its not multiplatform developer anymore"
Wut....
I own PS5, XSX and even Switch, doesnt change the fact Xbox collecting dust since i finished Forza motorsport which will be on PS5 later i bet, as every Xbox game
Every Xbox game? Then why release a new gen Xbox? Why release a new console if everything's goin over, that's what I wanna know.
"trust me"
Someone on N4g? Yeah how bout not.
Naw that's not a good reason. What you said doesn't make sense. Halo, Gears Fable etc main headliners won't be on PS. They need to sell the new console still.
What you said is not true, it is your wish only to justify Xbox purchase. I bet there will be Halo, GeoW and Fable on PS in the near future.
https://www.playstation.com...
Also add Horizon Forbidden West and Ragnarok. Most of Sony's games this gen are on PC now. I thought y'all knew this? Extreme denial. That's leaves out GT7 and Astro Bot.
@piroh
Whats not true? Sure keep the hopium alive I guess. They need to sell consoles and by putting specifically Gears and their other titles on PS would hurt their console sales full stop and ppl would have 0 reason to pick up the new Xbox. You gotta use your head just a little bit bro.
There will always be ps5 and then ps6 games not on pc at release. They will eventually make their way there, but then new games will come out to take their place as exclusives. As long a playstation developes hardware they will have exclusives of at least 1 year.
You still dont see it or you dont want to see it, well or you dont want us to see it...
They dont need to sell consoles, they need to sell games. If i said one year ago to you that Sea of thieves and Hifi rush end up on PS5 you would said the same you saying now about Halo, GeoW and Fable. It starts with smaller games as a success test and you know - it was a success.
Nintendo and PlayStation not only have great systems but their exclusives often feel more creative and reach a higher level than xboxs
Despite being a huge halo fan and a gears fan during the 360 when gamepass came.about the quality was on a fast decline it's content over quality
"They dont need to sell consoles, they need to sell games."
Then why release a new discless Xbox and working on new gen Xbox then? If they dont care about consoles anymore? Give me a proper answer and not "trust me" nonsense.
Those are smaller platform games. Those games do nothing for console sales or even gamepad subs.
Gears, Fable, Halo, main line Xbox games are staying on Xbox because again, the need to sell Xbox consoles, for the last time, I'm not saying it again. Doom, New Elder Scrolls, ABK stuff will be multiplat. Because they were already multiplat and aren't mainline Xbox IP.
Again try to use your head.
It seems you still dont understand. Xbox "exclusives" can be played almost everywhere - PC, mobile or even TVs and soon to be add Playstation. They NEED to sell games everywhere possible, PS included. Xbox consoles are just one of many options to play their games. Even Phill confirmed more will come to other consoles. Can you imagine how well Fable or Halo would sell on console with 80 mil player base?
Im afraid you still wont understand.
Wow how surprising, no call for Nintendo to put it's games on xbox or PlayStation, or xbox to put any new games on PlayStation. And no, games from publishers they bought that were going to be on PlayStation anyway don't count.
And xbox putting games on PlayStation and Nintendo works because they have market share and their owners still buy games.
There is zero point to putting games on xbox where people don't buy anything and they only have ten percent global market share.
Third party games sell less than 20 percent of total units versus PlayStation, even less when a game is on all three platforms.
Shawn Layden put it best. The big tent pole games are at their significance at the beginning of a gen, but a little less near the half way or end of a gen because you set the sales momentum with the best games.
That's why Xbox had momentum at the end of 2021 with Halo and Forza. All got lost in 2022 with the delay of Redfall and Starfield. While PS released Horizon and GoW in 2022 which pulled them waaaay ahead of Xbox.
The ones who say exclusives don't matter anymore are seriously wrong, dead wrong. As I said they shift the console sales momentum in your favor especially when you couple it with a major third party release l like COD. That's why in 2022 COD leading the charge that holiday for PS along side Gow an established IP was a deadly combo. Something MS did during the 360 days. Cod on top of whatever game Xbox was releasing that holiday also.
That's why they've been having tug of war with COD because it brings in money and console sales.
In all honesty Sony will see those Switch sales and probably put smaller family friendly games on the platform when they see more green from Switch, expect more of that. This is exactly how it started with Xbox. PC first, then Switch with games like Ori, 007, Cup Head, Banjo etc now PS will follow suit.
But their big game system selling games will remain exclusive (so they can sell consoles) then come to PC year later or so. Basically they'll have timed exclusives.
"That's why Xbox had momentum"
Lol. Nah they didn't have that really at any point. Not sure how they would even gain any at this point. Selling less than the Xbox One is pretty telling
I hope it hypothetically Sony did make their games multiplatform there’s a massive outcry for Nintendo to make their games third party
Ohhhhh…yeah, they won’t will they
Whenever Microsoft does something it’s only Sony that needs to then do the same.
It's only when Xbox does something out of desperation that games media acts like this is the way the industry should be heading. There loser should set the agenda.
Why is that?
''It's only when Xbox does something out of desperation that games media acts like this is the way the industry should be heading''
Bingo!!
Tomorrow Phil could announce that xbox is no more and all these journos and gaming media outlet will be writing pieces on how this is the best decision ever for MS and their green brand and how Sony should follow the same steps lmao.
What the hell were you reading when things were rumored to go full Multiplat for Xbox back in February? What positive spin and articles are you talkin about? I've seen no such thing especially on YT it was pure doom.
I swear y'all love making stuff up.
Exactly. It's ONLY when Xbox has an issue, then everyone should follow suit. The least successful console brand is not the one to follow. Ever.
Fortunately, Nintendo and Sony stick to their guns and do their own thing.
Playstation has followed Xbox's lead enough as it is, I don't want them to become more like them.
I think Sony realizes they need to hold on to exclusives. If they don't, Nintendo would be the only console worth getting. Otherwise you could play all PlayStation and Xbox games on PC. I think Sony is smart enough not to follow that strategy.
Yes there is, this is just MS damage control after the thing everyone has been saying was gonna happen is actually happening.
phil needs to port these games quicker, we only have four xbox exclusives so far
Sea of Thieves
Grounded
Hi Fi Rush
Pentiment
Those were never exclusive and always planned on being kept multiplatform like when they bought Minecraft
@destiny
umm all of those are on pc grounded is coming to ps5
you have 0 games that are only on the series console
Nobody but people who actually care which company sells more would be against the end of exclusivity. It's fandom, it's a cult, it's brand loyalty, that it. Competition would happen between developers who actually want their games to outsell other games. "Competition" is such a dumb argument because there is tons of competition between developers on the same consoles.
Exaclty.
PS players will always buy consoles over PC,
even if sony put the games day one.
I think it's unfortunate, but the only fair solution to inflated dev costs. It's already sank so many Devs, something had to give.
Releasing a game on PC years after its initial launch, long after the game was a reason bought a piece of hardware just to play it, is very different from releasing games on PC as well, day 1.
Wtf, yes there absolutely is. Let’s put it this way, if everything is available on all consoles I’m only buying a single one. So, yea, good luck to 2 of the 3 if exclusivity has no place.
Instead of making the correct less dramatic statement that "the 3 platform holders are exploring placing 1st party ip on platforms other than their own dependent in each companies corporate strategy " we get "all exclusives are bad for business because the industry isnt growing blah blah blah". Ever since Microsoft peddlled this nonsense instead of being upfront about why their platform is failing we've have dozens of these media types parroting this nonsensical thinking.
And before anyone says "Nintendo isn't doing this" I'm referring specifically to their ip being developed for mobile.
Tell that to Nintendo. Only way Nintendo will have Mario or Zelda on other consoles and PC (maybe) is if they stop making consoles and only make games like Sega.
You forgot pokemon even when its in a unplayable broken state the make hundreds of millions but cry about the cost of voice over's in there games.
Pokemon, Metroid, Starfox, any Nintendo IP. I only said the most popular 2 for example.😎
@PRIM
You do realize the last Pokemon game was 2 parts $120 usd and was the best selling game on switch all of 2022 i think its top if switch all time now.
Yep 24 million the ones before it were even higher
https://www.ign.com/article...
ign was 2023
this is 2024
https://www.nintendolife.co...
26mill 2021 game 31mill 2020 Pokemon game
The graphic for this targets Sony and my guess is that a lot folks want an exception for Nintendo. If Nintendo gave up on exclusives, its hardware would be subsumed by phones, PCs, and home consoles. It would be the end of Nintendo hardware. Do ya’ll want that?
False philosophy, every business industry does something special to make their products stand out from the crowd. Exclusivity will always be in the gaming industry in one from or another. However, there does need to be more realistic financials during the creation of these games.
Can only speak about myself, but:
I've bought PS3 because of exclusives like Metal Gear Solid 4, Demon's Souls, Killzone, Heavy Rain (it's not an exclusive anymore, but it was only on PS3 for it's whole runtime) and many others.
Then, later, i've also bought Xbox 360, because it had Halo 3, Castle Crashers, Chromehounds, Dead Rising, Fable 2 and other great exclusives.
I was planning on buying Xbox One just for the Scalebound, but they cancelled it, so i saw no reason of spending my money.
I (still) have zero reasons to even consider buying Xbox Series consoles, i can play anything they offer elsewhere.
Exclusives are what defines the console, they're THE reason to buy the console. Not ecosystem, not services (they're just bonuses).
They're also THE games that show you what this console is capable of (both in graphics and gameplay departments), like MGS 4 or Halo 3 did.
If a console has no exclusives, then what's the point of it? I can play its whole library on PC (that has it's own exclusives) or other console (that too have exclusives).
Buying a console without any exclusives, i feel like i'm at the disadvantage. Like, look at this - i can buy a console «A» that play games or i can buy a console «B» that can play all of «A» console games AND it also has exclusives, which one people would choose? The answer is obvious, in my opinion.
Exclusivity breeds competition....competition gives us options. The only reason Xbox is going in this direction is because they've given up fighting against their irrelevance. Their exclusives barely sold anything so for them it doesn't matter if games are exclusive. Gamepass is an enormous sled inflicted crutch. They're hoping to get tons of market share through it.once they're in a good place...then they'll go back to moving things to more exclusivity.
Until then they'll just be releasing everything on PC and some or eventually everything to PlayStation as well.
Hopefully they won't completely destroy their own console in the process.
I agree that the development costs are getting out of control but exclusivity still matters in an industry where console manufacturers are trying to push their sales. How else are you going to entice gamers to buy your console over the competition?
So what are some possible solutions instead of expanding to other consoles/pc's? They could charge more for games, they could double or triple load games with dlc, they could reduce scope from AAA to AA.. aside from those options, none of which sound good, I don't know how they could grow revenue.
Yeah those are all good questions. I think the problem lies with the inherent (or perceived) problem concerning 'business growth'. If anything, it's that concept that business is not 'successful' unless it's showing growth year over year. To me, that is what is unsustainable and leads to the ebbs and flows in the industry.
Maybe if we're sticking to the precise distinction in the article title concerning AAA-developed games only, then perhaps yes those big companies need to have their games on a many platforms as necessary in order to recoup their expenses and development costs. But console manufacturers still need to give gamers a reason to buy their specific consoles over the competition and exclusive titles still play an important role in that.
Development costs aren't the problem...it is the budgets that they give themselves...reduce the budgets and make great games.
If the issues are doing it then so can AAAs
I absolutely hate this argument. The only reason for consoles to exist is first party exclusives. Without them the whole industry crumbles imo.
PlayStation fans are in for another disappointment. Sony keeps moving the bar.
We went from, “we believe in generations” to where we are today. The costs of triple A games have gone through the roof and keep rising. I see more of Sony’s games coming to pc to make up for the costs.
I think if there's no exclusives then developers passion isn't there anymore. Some developers that are small take risks have the knack to make the best games that they can make.
There was a lot more passion in developers years ago of developers wanting to make the best of what they can make still money was the main thing. Now it's way more about how much money they can make.
So I think exclusives are important and seeing what Last of Us and Uncharted 2 produced in the PS3 era was well beyond its time.
Ya that's why Microsoft dominates the console market because exclusives don't matter
There will still be exclusives, timed exclusives & gaming console exclusives which are still exclusives. Exclusives will always differentiate gaming consoles.
I always find it hilarious that there are still people who believe that Microsoft have any impact on the industry. Let me spell it out for you: THEY'RE THE LOSERS. Why the hell is what the loser is doing a good thing and why should the rest of the competition follow them? If it's anything, what Microsoft is doing is what the others should definitely not do.
Exclusives do matter, it's the reason why a console is selling, which is why Sony and Nintendo are dominating. Maybe Microsoft should have thought twice before releasing their games day one on PC, it makes buying a Xbox useless. What Sony is doing is working. Release your games on PS5, then wait 2-3 years until the sales have died down and release it on PC.
I will always favor having exclusivity. It creates competition, and competition leads to ingenuity and makes things better.
I feel like I've read this article every year since 2008, when I joined this website. It may end up becoming true eventually, but I feel like there is something beneficial to having games exclusive to one console. When we think of many of the greatest games of all time, they were often exclusives. Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid (any of the first four), Halo, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, etc...I think by just focusing on making a game for a single system developers are able to perfect things using time that otherwise would have been spent making the game work on other systems. That pushes gaming as a whole forward.
So than why did Microsoft spend over 83 BILLION dollars to make former multi-plat games exclusive?
Exclusives matter they give us good reasons to buy into a system I just played tears of the kingdom it was an experience that I couldn't get anywhere else same as playing Spider-Man 2 last year.
Just because Xbox is giving up doesn't mean the rest of the industry is
The sky is falling the sky is falling! What because Microsoft drops a few games on other platforms exclusivity is dead? Notice how they were exclusive to Xbox first then ported to other platforms. Or funny how Playstation games were exclusive to Playstation then ported to PC. Games have a course they run their course. Then they are ported to other platforms to make more money, breathe new life into the game, introduce the game to newer people. Exclusives are not dead you still need exclusives to push the hardware. Honestly as a Playstation owner I don't mind if PC players get to enjoy Uncharted, Spiderman, Days Gone. I wish Sony would have ported the first three UC games to PC. I enjoyed the games on Playstation I can still play them and now it's the PC players shot to enjoy them as well. And if I remember right ever since XB360 went through its life cycle. Microsoft has been dry with exclusives when compared to Playstation and the PS4. Right now it's a dry spell and new games will be gearing up for the holiday season. Games always run a dry spell through the summer.
Its not really about exclusives. Its about a lack of creativity or forced lack of creativity by higher ups who want to follow trends, its all 'lets make a sequel or remaster' or 'we need to make a multiplayer game or hero shooter 'yet people have good ideas that can be done. Also scale back games. we see and enjoy alot of indie games now. Pixelated stuff, 2d games. I think Bigger studios should use their resources and explore smaller and more varied types of games now with smaller dev cycles, less expensive and still lot of potential.
Did you see the leaked activision dei spreadsheet all dev teams over there need to adhear to the clipboard or get the fuck out.
A new crash game? no fuck off we need a black lesbo behind a new paywall scam
then there is no place for individual pc building as well and we all have to play on uniformed systems
Xbox defence force are already here doin the usual routine! Sorry boys the only bragging rights you have right now is Playstation is the same like xbox releasing on pc and ms games sells more on PS than xbox. Xbox games release in PC day one and Playstation is not. BIG DIFFERENCE no matter how you push your agenda thats a fact
Just because xbox have had to humiliate themselves to stay in business doesn't mean other have to follow suit.
Whats up with these articles. Are people that dumb. Said it too many damn times I'll say it again. The gaming industry would cease to exist. Exclusives matter. Someone tell me how everything everywhere will work? You have 3 gaming companies with consoles. You put everything everywhere instead of people buying Nintendo and PS or Xbox and Nintendo or All three then what? There's a loss on console sales. No more consoles, they're not lucrative. So they all move to subscriptions, but with nothing to set them apart none of them really succeed, now their splitting the videogame audience. One drops the price everyone migrates to that subscription cause it's the cheapest and they all have the same thing. The other two go out of business. Id say they'd survive off software but if they all have everything the other has does software really matter? Everyone would go to PC and Nintendo Microsoft and Sony would officially be 3rd party. It'll be worse than these movie subscriptions, at least they all have different things. They all become third party for each other .Basically IT MAKES NO SENSE.
Lmao, must get a bot fan that wrote this. Just because MS is getting out of the exclusives business doesn't mean sony and nintendo will. They are the 2 companies that matter most in the industry.
I tend to agree with the writer here. Exclusivity isn’t as profitable as it once was because games cost way too much to make nowadays. Hence why a studio can still be shut down after selling a few million copies. 15 years ago those were great numbers with profitable returns.
Like Nintendo, both Sony and MS will need to find a way of making games on lower budgets. They’ll need to make more Astro Bots and less of TLOU type games.
To be clear Sony already knows this which is why they are releasing games on PC after a year or two. I think this strategy is smart because their die hard fan base will prefer to play their games immediately and the only way to do that is by owning their console.
The purpose of the console industry is to push outdated pc hardware to its fullest. In order to do that the games had to be catered to a single console. If everything is made to work on everything then the bottom line goal is compatability...which defeats the purpose of why the console industry is even marketed in the 1st place. Outdated PCs now with no value.
The companies will offer different services and content...just enough to keep them different. Imiss the PS3/360 days.
Sony will soon lean that without exclusives, it's income will fall and then some. It is ridiculous that the lessons of the last three generations have not stopped Sony from sticking with the model that has best served the console - excellent single-player games available only on Playstation.
With fewer exclusives on the PS5, Sony is already having problems and this will only get worse. Sony has so many IPs it could exploit but refuses to do so such as Infamous, SOCOM, etc. OKay, I accept new IPs are hard to create, but what about existing ones?
I don’t exclusivity but it’s a necessary “evil”. On one hand it forces us to make choices and miss out on certain games (unless you buy it all) but on the other hand it pushes the dev’s to deliver first party quality games (or so it should…).
I agree, put the games on as many platforms as possible is best for all gamers.
I don't expect Sony or Nintendo to put their games on Xbox, but MS should release their games on other platforms. They are in a different position than Sony and Nintendo and it is clear they want to be a multi-console publisher. It would be a win win for them.
omg, looks like alot of gaming journalists really don't have anything interesting to talk about anymore.
Uh…yeah, there is on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. Just because holding onto exclusives is no longer working for Xbox doesn’t mean it isn’t working for anyone else. How are trash articles like this approved?
Typical Gen Z thinking. They’re so obsessed with fairness. Guess what? Not everyone gets a trophy just for competing. You work harder, and you hire better game devs, you make better games. You sell more consoles. That’s how life works.
Well, on Xbox maybe. PlayStation and Nintendo are doing just fine.
If we’re counting PC ports, I can’t really get behind that logic as I still think PC and consoles are separate enough that the people who are deciding between console and PC for gaming are small in number when compared to gamers that game on console or game on PC exclusively.
By that I mean, releasing all xbox exclusives on PC won’t hurt Xbox console sales nearly as much as releasing them all on PlayStation.
Oy. Another one of these scams? It was crap like this that made me dislike Hillary Clinton, among other staff members of the American government.
EDIT: @yesmynameissumo and Donnieboi
No kidding, right? Why not tax rated R movies or death metal music? While we're at it, let's charge anyone who drops an F bomb. Like the silver age! That will save the kiddies for sure!
Better tax the shit out of Hollywood then.
What if he taxes only AO, and not Mature, games?
