Microsoft’s Vista price cuts: less than meets the eye
Joel Hruska of Ars Technica writes: "It’s not clear why Microsoft would specifically cut prices on Vista Ultimate in an emerging market where the purchase of any legal OS might be considered a luxury, but the company’s decision to reposition its products in less-developed parts of the world probably has more to do with growing popularity of Linux than anything else. Offering various Vista flavors at lower prices may lead to a short-term rise in retail sales worldwide, but many of the lower-end computers sold in the developing world may not even be capable of running Vista at acceptable rates. That’s a separate problem, however, and it’s not something Microsoft is giving guidance on at the moment."
