Zombie Games seem to be everywhere today, spanning all genres and on all platforms. Fortunately, there are games like Dead Pixels, built from scratch by a man. Using mechanical survival and adds subtle elements of arcade classics. It then adds its own unique aspects to the mix to create a wonderfully addictive experience in the genre of zombie survival.
The graphics of Dead Pixels maintain the 8bits era style, which I personally love and think the truly successful indie games recently all use this type of artwork. Dead Pixels uses the old 2.5D effect where the characters are 2D sprites, but the player has the ability to move up and down the screen giving the effect of 3D, this usually leads to frustration of not knowing where we are and at the same we hit, but Dead Pixels using guns solves this with an impact area in the cone as shotguns.
Perhaps ironically, many of these games are rarely played by people who still enjoy videogames from the days of the arcade and systems like the NES and Sega Genesis. This list covers retro-inspired indie titles that deserve more attention. We’ve excluded more well-known games, such as Super Meat Boy and Shovel Knight, from consideration. Also note that many of the listed games are free. Finally, this list isn’t definitive; it only covers games that we believe are as good as or better than the retro-inspired games that get most of the hype.
Chadley and Tristan of Punch Nerds crank up Dead Pixels on Xbox 360 and discuss Chadley’s uncleanliness, zombies that look like cabbage and how unfair the game seems to be to Tristan.
GamR Mag Writes: "We have seen nearly every possible scenario of zombies featured in games, from dark, post apocalyptic settings to using plants to ward off the undead. No matter how unique or bizarre their presentation, we here at GamR Mag love zombies, and these are our ten favorites of all time."
State of Decay is probably my favorite, it's amazing for an arcade release. Can't wait to see what they can do when they make a full retail game.
For me, it's definitely The Last of Us. Had one of the best stories in a game in a long time, had great characters, and immersive gameplay. I even loved the multiplayer (though it doesn't have zombies). I do like The Walking Dead and Resident Evil, but TLOU was truly amazing.
