OTOY’s Octane Render reduces the cost of creating hyper-real 3D imagery

OTOY, a cloud-based technologies company, released its Octane Render software today. OTOY designed Octane as a rendering tool to work with common off-the-shelf graphics processors — like the kind from AMD and Nvidia that most people already have in their home workstation PCs. While cloud computing can disrupt many local industries by bringing Silicon Valley power to remote locations, OTOY is using its research to squeeze more power out of the computer sitting on your desk.

It doesn't work with AMD cards. It's CUDA based and there is no OpenCL/GL version, as they state it is not mature/developed enough for these purposes. But that's no problem, since most serious studios that deal with rendering will be using Nvidia GPUs.

This is a great rendering engine, although it's nothing ground breaking. It's definitely one of the fastest GPU raytracers, but there are still plenty of them out there, some with even more features, that maybe render a frame to the same quality in like a second or more time, which is hardly anything when it comes to the realm of photorealistic rendering haha.

"Players can now hide system apps, pin favorites to the list, and reduce the number of tiles displayed. This update is part of our ongoing effort to make Home more personal, flexible, and responsive to feedback."

This is welcomed, i like a less cluttered home screen.
