Sonic Adventure 2 Review [Capsule Computers]

Dustin Spencer from Capsule Computers writes: Nostalgia can be a tricky thing. I’m sure you have all heard that before, but when it comes to Sonic, those words are used quite often for good reason. Sonic Adventure 2 is one of those titles that many fans see as the last great Sonic game before the slump, or the start of Sega’s dark period for the blue wonder. I’m actually quite a fan of the game and have re-visited Shadow’s debut many times over the years to get my fix. Sonic Adventure 2 is now back in our sights with a new HD paint job, and has given me yet another reason to trek through my favorite 3D Sonic title to date. How does it hold up?

For someone like me that started playing games at late 90s it was heartbreaking to see what happened to SEGA. Good to hear this because how things were going in the last years for them. I remember the time when they closed a lot of arcades in Japan. Or even when Microsoft almost bought them several years ago.

I have a feeling the sales will drop a ton the next week since everyone figured out it's barebones and a technical mess. Hype and name brand can only get you so far.

I wanted to like this game but they did everything possible to disappoint. Maybe they can use this as a stepping stone for a future title, but so far this isn't it.

Phil writes, "Today, June 23rd, 2021, is Sonic the Hedgehog's 30th anniversary. 30 years ago today in 1991 a blue hedgehog named Sonic took the gaming world by storm with a spin dash, a too-cool-for-school attitude, and a hankering for chili dogs. I have played the game more than I'm willing to admit. Even beat all the DLC as well, and nearly S ranked everything including the DLC.

The game had good graphics for the time, and a fantastic soundtrack. If only it had an extra year of development it could have been a decent game. People keep harping on the kiss at the end of the game as if its a big deal. It really isn't (people kiss their cats and dogs all the time, and no one freaks out about that).

They try extra hard to hate on the game, and while it does have a multitude of unacceptable flaws and had serious development issues (Yuji Naka quit SEGA early on during the project which definitely caused some internal struggles at Sonic Team), there are some positive aspects about the game that people don't give it credit for.

Hmmm, this is kinda cheating, but I would rate Sonic 3 & Knuckles as #1, rather than having the two games separately occupy #2 and #3.

That was literally the only game I played for YEARS.
