Siliconera- Silent Hill: Book of Memories Hands-On – Not Scary, But Creepy

Siliconera- While Silent Hill: Book of Memories is a multiplayer dungeon crawler, my recent experience with the game involved me playing by myself. Before hopping into the game proper, I had a chance to look through the menu, where I had the ability to customize my character a little bit.

I found it enjoyable. There are some lighting issues in some areas in the demo. It can get really dark to a point where you can barely see anything or where there is light, just not as much as you would hope. At first I thought it was my Vita; but after reading this preview, I found out it's suppose to be like that and the play is equiped with a flashlight. You have to press Select to use the flashlight.

Its a dungeon crawler in a way, it plays well with the Vita. It doesn't have the best graphics, but its not an eye swore. Playing on your own or with someone will change certain task(s) that you will can do or certain things will only show up when playing by yourself.

There are three levels/zones in the demo, with the last one ending in a boss battle. I don't know how far it goes, but it starts out about the players Job(promotion and stuff). That could be just the person I used. I'm going to use someone else the next time I play.

The game is enjoyable and the demo helped me make up my mind about the game. I'm getting it for the factor of; Having something to play on my Vita and the fact that how much time went by with me going through each room looking for stuff. If there are 6 endings, tt will have enough replay value for me to justify my purchase. My grade for this demo is a 8.5.

Edit: I downloaded the demo off the EU PSN Store from my Vita.

You probably missed the "i" blinking on the top right corner at some point in the beggining where it mention the flashlight and how to use it :p

I enjoyed the demo so much that I didn't even wanted to rush anything and I walked through every single corner in every room like I was in an exploration mission LOL I simply didn't wanted to miss anything and by doing that it took me 1 hour and a few seconds do complete the entire demo, and I didn't even died once, just took my time to enjoy the game.

Like you said, graphics aren't amazing but still pretty decent, I liked, but the cutscenes are a bit low res, not sure if that's faulty or simply a kinda of cartoonish style.

Gameplay feels good, responsive with differences when it comes to using weapons which I like, big weapons makes slow attacks but more deadly and smal weapons fast attacks less lethal.

In the end my impression was good, good enough that made me go back to the store to vote the demo, which I almost never do, but I do feel like Vita owners should try the demo.

I missed a few of them along my first play through. I'm on my second playthrough and the puzzle at the end is different than the first one I had to do.

The first one was with some white clothed like ghost that had to be put in order from biggest to smallest in a straight line.

This time I have a shelf with 4 different color rabbits. A different note as well. I think it has something to do with the starting item I chose.

About the puzzles, from what you're saying, we've had them switched in our first playthrough as I've had the opposite, funny.

But more funny is all the disagrees, got to love people who take the time to just click that button for the sake of clicking it, hilarious.

At least we gave some feedback about the demo and what people can expect from it.

It was better than I expected.Anyone with a Vita should try it before judging it.

@Disagrees This isn't like Silent Hill on PS3 or 360.This one is actually worth playing.

jghvhv4594d ago

Yep,It's on the Euro PSN now.

I guess everyone who will play the demo will be surprised how good the game actually is. So please try the demo before judging the game, this is all I can say!

For me it is day one, already liked the game at Gamescom and after playing the demo even more.

I mostly disagree with Downpour's position. Yeah, the game is not amazing by any stretch of the imagination but is much better than the HD Collection and Homecoming. The main issue is the performance, but that was mitigated by the patches, especially on the PS3. Personally, I put it a little behind Origins and The Room.

Having Restless Dreams as a different entry from Silent Hill 2 is also a choice.

Normally, we would not consider it a different game (Restless Dreams), but since it had a very different critical reception and had new content, it was allowed. As for Downpour, I would agree, but since that one is subjective, we let him make his case for the placement.

silent hill 2 is definitely the best one out of those.

for me personally, the whole ritual/cult stuff was always so weird to me in all the other games.

CrimsonWing69547d ago

No disrespect but I put SH2 over 1. 1 is fantastic, but 2 took it all up a level.

We agree, that is why the writer put it in top place!
