Unofficial Dark Souls PC mod fixes rendering resolution

A fan-made mod for Dark Souls on PC has fixed the game's rendering resolution.
Eyebrows were raised earlier this month when Digital Foundry discovered the game's PC port to be locked at 1024x720, offering no improvement over its console brethren.
"From Software has admitted in advance that there have been technical issues, but this is still quite surprising," Digital Foundry's Tom Morgan wrote.
"This lower resolution doesn't bring out the fantastic visual design going into the game, where we'd hoped a PC version would take it to new heights. It's quite likely this will draw the ire of PC gamers expecting the premium experience. That is, until an official patch or heroic modder comes to the rescue."
Step forward such a fan.

Either the developers are retarded or they purposely limted the PC version so its close to the console version.

Either way an 80kb DLL file fixes what the developer was claiming difficult to do. Wonder how retarded a Studio would have to be to not be able to give higher resolutions or perhaps its just pressure from console makers, who dont want PC version looking much better.

I don't think they're "retarded", I think there was an element of laziness though. They probably did not want to spend the time testing myriad combinations of resolutions, drivers, GPUs, CPUs and AA/AF settings before release. Still, many developers don't do this, but they do leave at least some setting in the config.ini for users to mess around with if they so please (without official developer support).

Of course, there could be an issue or two that people haven't encountered yet that caused FROM to lock the resolution in the first place; but so far, no such issue has become apparent (some people can't see some messages, but it's already being fixed).

And it seems the framerate is capped at 30FPS because the animations are key-framed at 30, but of course they can just use an internal timer and interpolate the frames for higher rates (newbie modders did this years ago with the Quake engine with relative ease), but they didn't do that either. It's sad, surely, and it may reflect poorly on FROM in the eyes of gamers, but hopefully they'll do better next time around (with more time and synchronized development with consoles).

That said, the game is selling VERY well, besting even CS:GO on Steam, even if a good portion of that is thanks to the efforts of Durante. And it actually looks pretty damn good in 1080p, with surprisingly detailed textures, that would never have been apparent in the 1024x720 framebuffer (look up some screens, it's actually a night and day difference).

From software should definitely be praising the mod for extra sales , has me interested again , added to wish list , but ill probably be going with demon souls on the PS3 after I finish D3 inferno because well I already own that game lol , so not sure how long that will take me to finish.

But like you said the next iteration should be much better , this is From Software's first PC attempt I believe , they can learn a lot from it , interested to see their next PC title if they continue to support the platform.

This is what I love about the PC community. so many of the fixes for buggy or poorly coded or lazy ported games come quicker than the dev manages to patch the game themselves. Goodness knows modders have rescued multiple bethesda PC games alone...

From software should let the community send them code 'fixes', sift through the best ones like res and framerate unlocks and mods. Test them for stability as usual, then incorporate them as official patches.

At the very least offer credit for these fixes in the game's patch notes and maybe a little reward for those involved. Credit where credit is due, because they have been embarassed quickly in front of the entire PC community by one person with a little knowledge.

Frankly i think this is a genius idea. I don't want to see devs relying on the PC community to fix their cockups, but they should acknowledge them when they do (which is often) and potentially boost sales!

They should of hired pc devs. Japanese devs seem to only know consoles. Hence 95% of Japanese rps's are only on console.

Capcom does ok though.

This (and a GMG code) convinced me to buy. Thank you!

Funny seeing all those screenies being posted with 999 Estus Flasks. Truly weak.

The prevalence of parrying: Why is it so popular?

Parrying has been creeping into more games, with almost every high-profile title of the last few years featuring it in some way.  Why?

i understand the authors frustration i'm not the best at parrying in games. not that i can't complete a game that requires it but it is a definite harder thing for me than other kinds of techniques in games. which might be the main reason it's so heavily added in games nowadays. want to make your game challenging without having to do a lot of work? just add a parry boss. (what i mean by parry boss is a boss you have to beat by parrying such that their attacks will kill you otherwise)

I always think it's fine as long as such games also have the roll/dodge panic button. But I understand the will to parry, it seems so cinematic in a fight when you pull it off.
