Section 8, in my personal opinion, is an extremely underrated game that deserves way more than what it's currently getting credit for.
It is a game available on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Arcade for $30 USD, as well as on disc at the same price in game stores such as GameStop for all platforms. It is also available on Steam, for the same price.
The game has both online/offline multiplayer and single player story mode. The story mode's main purpose is to teach you the basics of how to play the game, and get you into the groove of the game. The multiplayer, however, is where the game really shines. The multiplayer has both online and offline modes.
I'll go into detail about the online mode in the online section.
The offline, however, includes robust AI support, so that you can play a match without online. The AI has several modes -- Balanced, Swarm, Super Swarm, and One Man Army. Each also has a difficulty level -- very easy, easy, medium, hard, and insane.
AI Mode Details:
Balanced -- Exactly what it says; the AI will make sure that both teams are balanced out.
Swarm -- Your team will have slightly less AI players than the enemy team.
Super Swarm -- Same as swarm, but with even less players on your team.
One Man Army -- You against an army, easy enough to understand.
There is only one game mode -- but within that one game mode, there are many sub-modes that can be activated at different times, such as Outpost, VIP, Bomb, Convoy, or Intel. Each mission is unique in its own way. These sub-modes are called "DCMs" and are activated for a team once a player opens the DCM menu and activates one. Each activation, however, costs money and requires a certain amount of points in the game.
Included online is a leveling system that lets you unlock simple customization changes and new ranks.
Many people have criticized this game for being a knock-off of Halo: ODST. This is completely untrue, as this game was under development before ODST's concept was ever even released.
SegmentNext writes: "Defunct developer TimeGate Studios is currently experiencing interest from numerous bidders on its intellectual property (IP). After its bankruptcy earlier this year, due to lawsuits and other bad press, the studio’s shooters are up for grabs."
For a limited time only, Bundle Stars, the direct-to-consumer company focusing on digital downloads, is launching its biggest PC game bundle to date. Gamers have the chance to download and own 12 standalone PC games for the price of just $5.
Venturebeat.com: Publishers and developers are like soap-opera characters. One day they’re working together, then the next they’re plotting how to take each other down.
That’s how developer TimeGate, which produced the Xbox Live Arcade first-person shooter Section 8, ended up owing publisher SouthPeak Interactive $7.3 million in damages, as originally reported by Polygon. This comes after the latest court appeal in the long-running case went in favor of SouthPeak.
Awww, this is horrible. This is going to destroy them. Southpeak, this is not cool. You could of just told them to pay your lawyer fees and then just let them be. I know what company I will be boycotting in the future.
Both sides are idiots here. TimeGate isn't innocent, they are the ones that originally opened the lawsuit. Their publisher just said "yeah? Well take this" and won.
Honestly I'm normally on the developers side, but it was stupid to do that and greedy. Just say "we are done" and walk away, find someone else to publish. If they want the crappy Section 8 license, let them have it.
The law is always on the side of the guys with more money.
In this case, the publisher paid more so now the developers have to give up the franchise and go bankrupt. Justice isn't served.
Quite a generous review, but at the end of the day if the game is fun for you, that's all that matters. :]
I played Section 8 on PC during open beta phase and by the first look it was very good. Then I started to play. The game is well thought and is interesting but player controls is terrible. There was some kind of inertia when you wanted to move that led me to berserk state. I wanted to play but I couldn't. That was it for me.
