I learned quickly that Parrying was a useful combat technique to learn early in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Parrying in the first title Zelda: Breath of the Wild, was paramount to deflect back Guardian Beams as if you didn’t, you’d mostly likely die. It’s very much the same in Tears of the Kingdom. How Do I Parry in TOTK?

When I first started playing Tears of the Kingdom, I struggled with Parrying. But after hours of practice, I finally nailed it and was so happy. To Parry in the Tears of the Kingdom: raise your shield by holding down ZL this will target the enemy. Now hover your finger over A button—Timing is key here—swing your shield (press A) just as the enemies’ attack makes contact with you. This will slow down time, knock them back, and give you a chance to return a counterblow. It may take some practice to get the timing right, but keep at it, and you’ll parry like a pro in no time and master defense.

You can Parry most attacks in Tears of the Kingdom, apart from boss attacks, of course, oh I tried, so from the normal red Bokoblin, Yiga Clan members, Guardians, and all the other new enemies roaming the world in Tears of the Kingdom.

But as I mentioned before, timing is crucial in Tears of the Kingdom. Do not repeatedly tap A and hop for the best. Wait and be patient. If you have played the Dark Souls series, you’ll already be excellent at this, as the timing is close-knit; it’s not as tight as a Soulslike Parry.  It also doesn’t matter the type of shield, whether it is a wooden shield, small shield, or metal shield. But you will need to learn the pattern of different types of attacks.
