The release date for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is quickly approaching, and franchise fans are gearing up for the Friday launch. The Breath of the Wild sequel is the most highly anticipated game of the year, garnering excitement to see how the new title will stack up against its acclaimed predecessor.

In the months leading up to its launch, Tears of the Kingdom has been compared to Breath of the Wild and previous installments in a long list of ways. While most long-time players keep score when it comes to in-game features like Link’s new abilities, others have directed their attention to compatible systems.

Breath of the Wild launched alongside the Nintendo Switch console and was additionally compatible with the Wii U. Is it possible that Tears of the Kingdom will receive a similar treatment and be made playable on the older Wii U console upon release? Let’s get into it.

Can You Play Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on Wii U?

At the time of writing, no, Tears of the Kingdom will not be playable on Wii U consoles.

This has been confirmed on the official website for Tears of the Kingdom, where it is explicitly stated that the new title will be exclusive to Nintendo Switch family systems. This includes the standard Nintendo Switch console, the Switch OLED Model, and the Switch Lite.

While this may come as a disappointment to fans of the Wii U, it’s not entirely surprising. The Wii U eShop closed down earlier this year, limiting access to games. This simultaneously affected the Nintendo 3DS, falling in line with the prioritization of newer systems, like the limited edition Tears of the Kingdom Switch OLED Model.
