Over the course of your playthrough of The Last of Us Part 1, chances are you’ll come across a couple of safes that will be locked with there being no key in sight. No, you haven’t missed a key or anything, there’s just a different way to open the safe.
We’ll be going through everything you need to know about opening safes in The Last of Us Part 1 as well as what you can expect to find inside.
How Do You Open Safes in the Last of Us Part 1?
Safes in The Last of Us Part 1 aren’t opened by using a key. Instead, if you interact with a locked safe, you’ll be asked to enter a combination of three sets of two-digit numbers with the combination being different for every safe. As soon as you enter the correct combination, the safe will automatically open and you’ll be able to salvage the items inside.
Of course, the game wouldn’t just have you try random combinations again and again until you finally got the right one. Because of this, there are two ways to find a safe combination. The first way is the official way, while the second one is not as well known.

Looking For The Combination
Near every safe in The Last of Us Part 1, there will be an intractable item that will have the safe’s combination written down on it.
- For the Downtown Subway Shopping Area safe, which is in the section where we have to sneak past the clickers, you’ll find a note inside a drawer behind the counter of a store that will have the safe’s combination written on it.
- For the safe located in Bill’s Town, you’ll have to go past the safe and keep heading forward until you come across a barricade. Attached to a barbed wire will be a note with the safe’s combination written on it.
- For the safe located in the flooded lobby of the hotel, you’ll find the note with the safe combination on the right side of the stairs heading up near some luggage.
- Finally, for the safe located in the Suburbs, you’ll have to head to the house next to the ice cream truck. In this house, not only will you find the safe, but you’ll also fund a box of cigarettes on the top floor inside a drawer with the safe’s combination written on it.
Listening Closely
The second and more creative way of finding a safe’s combination in The Last of Us Part 1 is by listening closely when going through the numbers when entering a safe combination. If you listen carefully the correct number will sound different as you flick through the numbers. Repeat this with all three numbers and you’ll open the safe.
