The First Descendant has some pretty awesome moments, from fighting waves of enemies and ripping off Colossus parts to awesome personal missions. However, expecting everything to be great is unrealistic, and some flops are bound to happen. Like the infamous “super-mario-jump” missions for example, or, the subject of today’s article, the drone escort missions.
Escort missions are arguably the most annoying mission type in all multiplayer games, and the situation is not different in TFD. Thankfully, there aren’t many of them, but the problem arises when a Descendant or a Weapon part that you need is only obtainable from one of those (like Freyna Stabilizer). The missions are already a slog, but one mechanic is making stuff way more annoying than it should be.
The Shield Recharge Mechanic Needs To Go
When doing the Drone Escort missions, you have to follow a drone around, and “power it up” using your own Shields. That means you have to be both nearby and have some Shields, or it will not move (or crawl, to be more specific) at all.
One player, named theoutsider95 on Reddit, started a discussion saying that the Shield Recharge requirement makes these already irritating missions a pain to deal with. “Escort missions are boring, but then here you need shields to move the drone. Your shields get removed by one or 2 shots by the enemy, and you need to wait a while for it to Regen (even if you have equipped some shield Regen).”
Or Better Yet, Redesign the Escort Missions
The majority of players actually call for a redesign of these missions or outright removal. To be completely honest, they are not Nexon’s best work. You have to escort a slow-moving drone, power it up with Shields, and fight off enemy waves that are more annoying than challenging. The drone has a lot of ground to cover, making this a pretty “brainless” operation, with little to no engagement required.
As perfectly summed up by energizernutter: “Those missions make void shard farming look fun.” User mr-_-tete said: “They need to be redesigned to not need Doing. I don’t think anyone in this game likes doing these missions.” and xBlack_Heartx added: “I’d prefer if they just removed them from the game entirely and replaced them with something far more interesting.”
While outright removal of these missions would be the best, we understand that it requires a lot of work. The OP added: “…removing a mission and adding a new one takes resources. So, an easy “fix” would [be] removing the shield requirement.” But some tweaking would only benefit the game. For example, making the drone move faster if your Descendant level is higher than the Mission level would make it feel a bit less like a chore. We hope Nexon realizes this and makes some improvements, if not in Season 1, then somewhere in the near future.
