Looter Shooters are all about finishing the missions as fast as possible. Each successful run will grant you some rewards, with the best items having the lowest drop rates. That means that you will usually need multiple runs to get the items you want. The First Descendant is already flagged as not having the best possible RNG, whatever the in-game numbers say, and players everywhere complain about the sheer number of runs needed to get something with a 20% drop rate, for example. However, when you are way more powerful than the Mission requires, those runs can be done pretty quickly. Unfortunately, some missions have an extremely annoying feature that unnecessarily prolongs the overall mission time, and basically every The First Descendant player hates it.
Immunity Balls Being Immune is Peak Frustration
When you fight a big boss at the end of a mission (not talking about the Colossi here, they have their own mechanics), there are a couple of different “stages” they go through. Almost every boss, from the second stage onwards, summons a group of floating balls that grant them immunity from all damage, until destroyed. Sounds simple enough. The trick is that those balls, in turn, are periodically immune to damage as well. So, to damage the boss, you have to destroy the immunity-granting floating spheres, which are also immune to damage in certain periods.
The worst part is that those immunities are not represented in the best way possible. When something is immune, it has a white “aura”. But, in the case of those immunity balls, the visuals are not the best, ie, sometimes the white glow is not visible yet, but the immunity effect is there, adding to the frustration. Naturally, the community is not too happy about it.
Community Wants the Floating Balls Removed or At Least Fixed
As you’d expect, The First Descendant players (especially those who grind boss battles) are more than frustrated with this gimmick. It serves no purpose other than prolonging the fight, and the fans want something to be done about it.
In one Reddit post, started by RedGeraniumWolves, the community voices their frustration. Comments like “This mechanic is about one of the most annoying I have encountered in gaming.” and “Just remove the balls entirely” are found all over the thread.
More cool-headed players instead claim that the balls themselves are not the problem, but the badly designed white glow is. You can hardly make out which balls are immune and which are not. Fixing that will make this mechanic less frustrating for everyone. As ItWasDumblydore pointed out: “There are quite a lot of frames where no glow + invulnerable. Also a few frames of glow + taking damage”, and more players agree with comments like “At least make it clear which ones are immune to damage” and “It wouldn’t be as bad if the animation matched up but it doesn’t.“
Grinding is an integral part of games like The First Descendant. Getting the weapon parts or Descendant parts that you want may take dozens of runs. Over time, you start cutting corners and seeing how you can complete those missions as fast as possible. But, if some in-game mechanic is slowing your progress down, just for the sake of slowing you down (looking at you, super-slow Analyzer Drones), it is reasonable that you’ll get frustrated. Hopefully, Nexon will do something about these floating balls. We doubt they will get removed completely, but at least they can fix the frames. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
