System Shock Remake Release Date and Details Announced

An enemy wielding a futuristic gun fires lasers at the unseen player in the System Shock Remake, surrounded by the game's signature neon lighting and intricate sci-fi details.

System Shock, the highly anticipated fully-fledged remake of the groundbreaking 1994 classic, will launch on PC on Tuesday, May 30th, 2023. This comes from a press release on Steam.

The release was initially scheduled for the end of March, but the development team needed more time to ensure the game met their quality standards. The remake combines the cult gameplay of the original with updated controls, HD visuals, an overhauled interface, and new sounds and music.

System Shock Remake Setting

Players will once again find themselves on Citadel Station, a sprawling, interconnected space station that houses all manner of scientific research and military hardware. The station has been taken over by an AI known as SHODAN, which seeks to destroy humanity and remake the world in her own image. Players must navigate through the station’s various areas and confront various enemies to stop SHODAN’s plan and save Earth from destruction.

One of the most exciting aspects of the remake is the enhanced combat system. Players will have access to a variety of futuristic weapons and will be able to use a combination of stealth and brute force to take down their foes. The new dismemberment system is sure to add visceral satisfaction to combat, as players will be able to watch their enemies explode into a shower of gore.

The hacking system has also been revamped, giving players a more intuitive interface for interacting with the various security systems on the station. This system ties in nicely with the game’s emphasis on exploration and puzzle-solving, as players will need to use their hacking skills to access areas that would otherwise be off-limits.

Who is SHODAN in the System Shock Remake?

Of course, no discussion of System Shock would be complete without mentioning the villainous AI at the center of the game’s story. SHODAN is one of the most memorable antagonists in video game history, and her malevolent presence looms large over every aspect of the game.

Players will have to contend with her taunts and tricks as they make their way through the station, and her eventual defeat will be a satisfying culmination of the player’s efforts.

The PC edition of System Shock is available for pre-order on Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store. Early buyers will receive free copies of the upcoming System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition. In addition, a playable demo of the game is available now as part of the Steam Next Fest. Console editions for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S are expected to follow at a later date.

System Shock was a groundbreaking game when it was first released, and its influence can still be felt in the video game industry today.

The remake promises to honor the legacy of the original while bringing the game into the modern era.
