The release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder is coming up this week on Friday, October 20. Despite recent leaks, longtime players remain excited to experience an all-new adventure in the Flower Kingdom. This is a new location for players to explore as they work to save the neighboring Kingdom from Bowser. While longtime fans are familiar with the King of Koopas’ antics, they’ll have a handful of new power-up items at their disposal, including the Wonder Flower. In light of these additions, many are curious whether the new title reimagines a past entry or introduces a new playable experience altogether. Here’s what we know.

For years on end, players have endured a 2D drought of sorts. Super Mario Bros. Wonder breaks the pattern with all-new content and a twist. In an Ask the Developer interview series with the development team for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, programming director Shiro Mouri revealed that the upcoming title is the first entirely new Super Mario Bros. installment in over a decade.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first entirely new installment in the side-scrolling Super Mario Bros. series in almost 11 years. Whenever you collect the new item, the Wonder Flower, the course and its gameplay transform dramatically, and a variety of “wonders” occur that would’ve been unimaginable in previous titles in the series.

This is a huge leap for the series and for its longtime fans who will soon experience firsthand all the new installment has to offer. As players explore the Flower Kingdom in a brand-new side-scrolling journey, they’ll encounter the makings of a whole new world with the help of Wonder Flowers. These mysterious items are the cause of seriously strange happenings in the Kingdom, setting up the game’s storyline when Bowser comes into contact with a Wonder Flower, himself.
