Sony recently announced the PS5 Pro after years of speculation and rumors that it was in development. Following on from what Sony did in the previous generation with the PS4 Pro, they are set to release an updated version of its current-gen system, offering more power, storage, and of course, that also means a higher price.
Earlier today, Sony announced the PS5 Pro which aims to “evolve the console experience and deliver the great games players expect.” Like the PS4 Pro, this new system has more power under the hood, and increased storage capacity, and it will aim to run at a consistent 60fps across more titles compared to the current base PS5 model.
In a blog post, Sony revealed what the new PS5 Pro offers saying,
- Upgraded GPU: The GPU has “67% more Compute Units than the current PS5 console and 28% faster memory. Overall, this enables up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay, making the experience much smoother.”
- Advanced Ray Tracing: The PS5 Pro will have “even more powerful ray tracing that provides more dynamic reflection and refraction of light. This allows the rays to be cast at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current PS5 console.”
- AI-Driven Upscaling: Sony is “introducing PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling that uses a machine learning-based technology to provide super sharp image clarity by adding an extraordinary amount of detail.”
It was also revealed that the new PS5 Pro will be a digital-only system, with the disc drive being removed, taking us closer to an all-digital future. The new console will also not include a stand and gamers will need to stand it up vertically unless you purchase the stand separately for $80.
The new console will also come with a new feature called Game Boost, which aims to improve the performance of over 8,500 PS4 games, allowing for improved image quality, frame rate, and resolution. Some PS5 games will also see an increase in performance through free updates and it will be stated in the title that it is an “Enhanced” title. Some of the games that will be enhanced for the PS5 Pro include Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered.
While the specs of the PS5 Pro may sound impressive on paper, it does come at a cost, as Sony has revealed the pricing structure for the PS5 Pro, and many aren’t happy about it. The PS5 Pro will cost,
- $699.99
- £699.99
- €799.99
- ¥119,980
With the average US sales tax, the PS5 Pro will cost approximately $750. However, for those outside of the US, it is a lot more expensive, with it costing the equivalent of $841.82 in Japan, $881.88 in Europe, and a staggering $914.92 in the UK.
Many players took to social media to respond to the price of the new system, with @viperxt saying “No stand, no disc drive, minimal improvements…Yet, some suckers will still buy this. This isn’t it.” While @AdamKoralik continued to echo what many other gamers are thinking by saying,
“The PS5 Pro costs $700 USD, before tax, & doesn’t come with a disc drive. It’s compatible with the separately sold detachable drive for $80. $780, before tax, you get a mid-generation upgrade. No thanks. This is heartbreaking for physical media. Also, the stand isn’t included.”
Tom Henderson also amusingly posted that “Play has no limits. It does, and it’s $700.”
If you want to add the PS5 Pro to your collection and enhance your gaming experience, pre-orders will go live on September 26th ahead of its November 7th release date.
