The next Call of Duty game doesn’t look like it will be Modern Warfare 3, as everyone expected. Instead, an expansion for Modern Warfare 2 became so beefy that it is now planned as a standalone release.
So 2023 will have a Call of Duty release after all.
The continuation of MW2 will release this fall, according to Bloomberg, and will carry over a lot of content from MW2. This content includes maps and modes, and likely many features.
This continuation was the expected “premium expansion” that Sledgehammer was meant to build for Modern Warfare 2.

Although that plan may change, the expansion-turned-full-release promises to be filled with enough content to justify the change. That’s good because it’s going to be a full-price game.
With the news that it will carry over old content, some fans are skeptical. It’s easy to assume this next Call of Duty game will be more of a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.1.
Many in the community see this as just adding a little bit to MW2 and touting it as enough for another $60.
Other users commented on the reports that Call of Duty would ditch the yearly release schedule. It doesn’t look like we’ll see a year without a new Call of Duty game anytime soon.
While it may sound strange to hear about an expansion becoming a full game, this is nothing new to the gaming industry. Ubisoft did the same thing with Far Cry Primal, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon, and Assassin’s Creed Freedom Cry. However, they did not charge full game prices.
The new Call of Duty game should contain significant content to justify the full-game price. There is no problem with older content, but it is a problem if the new content isn’t substantial.
Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes was a shorter game with a heftier price tag, and fans were not happy.
Fans will closely watch the next Call of Duty, and a smaller game will lead to many outcries of overpricing.
