Devoted hunters dreaded that this day would come. MH Wilds is the latest installment in the Monster Hunter series, and, unfortunately, in around four months since its release, the player count has dropped significantly, and the recent reviews on Steam have been Overwhelmingly Negative. So, what’s going on, and will MHW manage to pull through?
What’s Going on with Monster Hunter Wilds?
You are probably aware that the expectations for this game have been sky high. And that many players were thoroughly disappointed once the game actually dropped. However, you might not be aware of the proportions of this “fail”.
So, the game dropped on February 28, 2025. On release day, there were 1.384.608 concurrent players (via Steam). That’s quite a few players, right? Well, the latest numbers are concerning, to say the least. Over the last 24 hours (June 19/20), player numbers peaked at 16.900 concurrent players, according to SteamDB. That’s 1,22% of the highest recorded number of players.
At the same time, only 18% of the 8.693 reviews on Steam in the past 30 days were positive. That means that 82% of the reviews were negative. This is partly due to Capcom enforcing strict policies.
The Community Is Concerned by Low Player Count and Overwhelmingly Negative Steam Reviews
If you are a fan of Monster Hunter Wilds, you are most likely aware that the player count has been dropping steadily, and you’ve probably seen at least some of the negative Steam reviews. Naturally, the community is quite concerned about these trends, as they could lead to the demise of this game. It seems that the main problem is performance.
One player, Lorjack, noted: “Looking into the reviews, it’s mostly about bad performance, which is legit. Also, a lot of people are saying the game crashes on launch, which I’ve heard about before. Some people aren’t impressed with the lackluster title updates either, which is totally fair”.
So, even though there have been some (surprisingly) cool additions, the devs have to improve the game if they want it to survive. The Second Free title Update is just around the corner, and who knows, maybe they’ll manage to surprise the players with some big changes.
In the meantime, dear hunter, don’t forget to complete this week’s Event Quests and secure the Wudwud Guise α Palico Equipment Set. We’ll gladly hunt the Tempered Yian Kut-Ku. Try to enjoy the game, and happy hunting.
