A huge question within the gaming community is whether Modern Warfare 3 is a reboot or not. We’ll be exploring this topic, so keep reading to find out all the details.
Modern Warfare as a franchise, and Call of Duty by extension, has seen traditional annual releases for some time now. Modern Warfare in particular had a bit of a renaissance with its reboot along with the Warzone battle royale mode. Therefore, it follows that the next installment will follow a similar model. Let’s find out if that’s really the case.
Is Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 a reboot or a remake?
Yes, the 2023 Modern Warfare 3 is actually a reboot of the original MW3 game from 2011. To help clarify, let’s unpack what makes it a reboot instead of a remake.
The new version of Modern Warfare 3 will feature a campaign that’s a continuation of the story from the rebooted Modern Warfare 2. This means we’ll follow along through the story of Captain John Price and Task Force 141, following the events of MW2’s cliffhanger, with all the favorite characters present, like Ghost, Soap MacTavish, Gaz, and the infamous Vladimir Makarov.
To expand, both reboots of CoD Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare II featured new campaign stories that only had nods toward the ones from the previous games. It follows that Modern Warfare 3 will progress in a similar manner. Therefore, because it won’t replicate the original story verbatim, this makes the game a reboot rather than a remake.
This extends to the gameplay aspects as well. Modern Warfare III will be expanding and continuing on what was established in the current Modern Warfare 2. This includes shakeups in the form of new weapons, maps, and characters. There is also Warzone 2.0 to consider, a concept that wasn’t even a part of the 2011 version. All of this put together deviates from the original game enough to be considered a reboot.

With everything tallied up, it’s clear what makes the final installment of the Modern Warfare series a reboot rather than a classic remake. Modern Warfare 3 is set to grace our gaming platforms in November, and we’re excited to see how Activision handles the popular FPS franchise. However, some players might lament that all three games weren’t direct remakes. But it’s clear that the direction devs have chosen for the franchise caters more towards modernization. We’ll have to wait and see how it pans out upon release.
The good news is that this modernization means a rework and update of classic maps that gamers love, like Afghan, Derail, Estate, Favela, Karachi, Highrise, Invasion, Quarry, Rundown, Rust, Scrapyard, Skidrow, Sub Base, Terminal, Underpass, and Wasteland.
Modern Warfare 3 is developed by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, with the help of Treyarchon the Zombies mode, with Activision as a publisher. It is available on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and S.
