Like a Dragon: Ishin! takes place at the end of the Edo period during the Bakumatsu era. Western ships threaten Japan’s stability, galvanizing the Shishi’s imperialist ideals, who wish to overthrow the Bakufu and expel foreigners to rebuild it around the Emperor instead of the Shogunate. This version is a remake of the original game, released nine years ago. Here’s everything you need to know about this remake.

What’s the Release Date of Like a Dragon: Ishin!?

Like A Dragon Ishin will release on February 21, 2023, as a digital and physical release. This is one of the few games that will release on last-gen consoles this year. It coincides with the anniversary of the original game’s release on February 22, 2014.

Like a Dragon: Ishin! Plot

Players take on the role of Sakamoto Ryoma, who looks eerily like the main protagonist of the Yakuza games, Kazuma Kiryu. Similarly to real life, Sakamoto becomes a powerful figure and is crucial to establishing the Japanese empire as the dominant force in Japan. The story mostly follows a revenge story where Sakamoto takes on the alias of a famous samurai known as Saitō Hajime. Sakamoto’s revenge is not just about the reform, but mostly to avenge a father figure who was killed.

All Playable Locations in Like a Dragon: Ishin!

There have been two locations that were revealed to fans. Both are huge areas with their own districts, so it’s safe to say two is more than enough. The two are:

  • Kyo – Later known as Kyoto, Kyo is the capital of the nation and the site of the Imperial Palace. There are several inns, marketplaces, and entertainment opportunities for the locals. A key component of many Yakuza games is the red light district, where players will most likely get their start. There have been many attempts to conquer Japan by taking Kyo, a common idea during the warring states period that has endured.
  • Tosa – A castle town that starts the wave of insurrection across the country. Although Tosa’s people are considered unassuming, they live under Japan’s strictest caste system, where commoners fear and defer to the high-ranking samurai called Joshi. Discontent will spread throughout the populace, blurring all lines of justice, and war will consume them all.
