Will Final Fantasy 16 Have Turn Based Combat?
Final Fantasy 16 will not have turn based combat, which means characters will not be standing around waiting for the player to send commands to get them to attack, defend, or use items. It is instead an action game in the vein of the Devil May Cry series, where players have complete control over their characters and actions.
Why Did Final Fantasy 16 Stop Being Turn Based?
The Final Fantasy 16 developers said that the game does not have turn based combat for a few reasons in an interview with Game Informer. The first reason is that having turn based combat is to widen the player base that normally would not touch a Final Fantasy game, or is young enough to not be familiar with the franchise.
“For me, it’s the same as [Yoshida], that we want to get this game in the hands of as many people as possible,” said director Hiroshi Takai. “But like [Yoshida] said, a lot of gamers in their 20s, even some in the in the early 30s…are so used to playing games where if you you tilt the stick, someone moves.” Naoki Yoshida
The other reason is that turn based combat would be jarring given the immense graphical ability of the game.
“But when thinking of the graphical fidelity and the realism that’s provided by the PlayStation 5 technology, to have a game where people just stopped and not do anything in that type of high quality graphics is going to create something that is going to feel off and we wanted to avoid that,” said Takai. “And to make something where you have two people in the middle of a battle but they’re both just kind of sitting there looking at each other, waiting for somebody to implement a command, is going to be kind of jarring.”
