Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel to the world and story of 2018’ released inning dubbed Breath of the Wild. This means we will surely see its map littered with characters and references to the open-world Hyrule we’re used to from its preceding title. But from these returning characters, will Link’s legendary steed Epona also make a reappearance?
Here, we’ll discuss all we know about Epona and whether she will see a return in the upcoming Zelda Tears of the Kingdom.

Will Epona return in Tears of the Kingdom?
The straightforward answer to this question is “probably” though we can’t say for sure. Nintendo has come out with several trailers for both the lore and gameplay of the upcoming title, yet we still haven’t received much concrete information on returning characters.
Of course, we say probably due to the multiple instances of Link being shown riding a horse that looks distinctly like Epona in some of the trailers.
One would assume that the color markings on this horse on the trailer couldn’t be a coincidence, though before getting your hopes up it should be considered that pre-release trailers for Breath of the Wild also showed Link riding a horse that looked a lot like Epona. Even still, Epona was locked then behind an Amiibo reward, so it wouldn’t be farfetched to assume that Nintendo would do the same now.
Still, that shouldn’t stop players from hoping Nintendo makes the right call and add Epona as a legendary horse in the base game, maybe in a similar way to the Master Sword in Breath of the Wild.
Who is Epona in the Zelda universe?
In terms of lore, Epona is known as the goddess of horses in the Zelda universe. She’s often depicted as a beautiful brown horse with a flowing white mane and tail. Throughout the series, Epona has been a symbol of Link’s courage and strength and a loyal companion to him on many of his adventures.
To obtain Epona in Breath of the Wild, players were required to have a specific Amiibo figure. When players scan the Amiibo, there is a chance that Epona will appear as a special reward. Once obtained, players could ride Epona just like any other horse, with her having stats that made her one of the best horses in the game.
