How To Unlock Akimbo Attachment in MW2

Operative in a training ground shooting at an enemy offscreen

The Akimbo attachment has made its grand return in Modern Warfare 2 with some changes to which weapons it can be used with. The attachment lets you dual-wield pistols in the game, making the weapon nearly unbeatable at short range.

The downside to the Akimbo attachment is that you need to unlock it for every single pistol individually in Modern Warfare 2. Therefore, to help you out, we’ve prepared a complete guide to help you acquire the attachment.

How Can You Unlock The Akimbo Attachment In Modern Warfare 2

You can unlock the Akimbo attachment by leveling up the pistol of your choice to a certain level. Remember that you can only use the Akimbo on pistols in Modern Warfare 2, unlike the 2009 version of the game, which allowed it to be used on shotguns and submachine guns as well.

As such, here are the weapon levels needed to unlock the Akimbo attachment on different pistols.

.50 GS17

How To Unlock Akimbo For Shotguns In Modern Warfare 2

While there isn’t any way to use the Akimbo attachment on a Shotgun in Modern Warfare 2, you can use it on Shotgun-like pistols, like the Basilisk pistol with the Snakeshots attachment. Here’s what you’ll need to do if you’re really craving Shotgun gameplay with your Akimbo attachment:

  1. Equip the Basilisk pistol from the Secondary Weapon Select menu.
  2. Tap on the Gunsmith menu for this weapon and head into Ammunition options.
  3. Select the .500 Snakeshot, which functions similarly to a shotgun, along with the Akimbo attachment for the Basilisk.

Tips For Using The Akimbo Attachment In Modern Warfare 2

The single downside of using the Akimbo attachment on any of your secondary is the fact that you are not able to aim down your sight, leading to decreased accuracy for longshots. However, this decrease in accuracy offers a huge advantage in close combat, where you don’t need to Aim to kill your enemies.

Therefore, if you intend to use the Akimbo attachment in Modern Warfare 2, we recommend staying away from open areas where you may be forced to take long shots since these will not be accurate. Furthermore, you can use additional gun attachments along with your Akimbo to decrease the recoil of your pistols and make up for the lack of accuracy.
