The Last of Us Part 1 is now out on both PS5 as well as PC but players jumping in it for the first time might find themselves a little overwhelmed. After all, the series has always been notorious for putting you in difficult situations.

Luckily, we’re here to go through the two ways you can heal your health in The Last of Part of Us Part 1. Let’s break it down for you to be able to get through those tough encounters.

How Do You Heal in The Last of Us Part 1?

As mentioned above, there are two ways to heal your health, though only one of the two methods is actually reliable. Those two methods are:

  • Consuming food
  • Using a health kit

One thing to keep in mind is that if you feel like an encounter is too difficult, then there’s always the option to turn the difficulty down. Knowing every type of infected in the game might also help. If you don’t want to do that, however, then the below methods will be invaluable for you.

Consuming Food

The first way of healing your health in The Last of Us Part 1 is by simply consuming eatable items. When scouring the environment as Joel, there’s a chance you might come across food items like energy bars and canned food.

Now, although they’re instantly consumed by you so they don’t take up any space in your inventory, they don’t heal nearly as much as health kits do. Additionally, they’re rather unreliable as coming across them depends on chance.

To consume an item you simply have to get close enough to it so you see the icon on the screen and then interact with it. Keep in mind that if your health is already full. You won’t be able to interact with the food item as the icon will be greyed out.

Using a Health Kit

The second and much more reliable way of healing your health is using a health kit. There are two ways of getting health kits. The first is finding them laying around while scouring the environment while the second is to craft them yourself using alcohol and a rag (and both of them can also be found in the environment, though are much more common than health kits.)

There are actually two reasons we consider health kits to be more reliable than consuming food when it comes to healing health. The first reason is rather straightforward, which is the fact that you can choose when to use the health kit instead of having to consume it on the spot like it is with food items.

The second reason, meanwhile, is that health kits actually replenish more health than consuming food items, which means health kits are better in every aspect. The only downside is that, unlike food items, health kits take up space in your inventory.

Any time you want to use a health kit, press up on the d-pad if you’re playing with a controller, or the 7 key if you’re playing with a keyboard to equip the health kit. Then, hold the fire button to make Joel use the health kit.
