The Sims franchise has been rolling in new content recently, paired with their most recent title, the Sims 4, becoming free to play. The game now supports tons of additional DLC, as well as free updates added periodically to the base game.
The March 2023 update brought newborn children to the game, as well as adding a new life stage to the Sims’ life cycle, the Infant. Children now start as newborns before becoming Infants, then Toddlers, then Children. While the Sims are cute in these younger stages, we all must eventually grow up.
Because of these new stages, the lifespans for each stage were changed as well, meaning you may not know when your Sim will be getting ready to take their first steps and move on to toddlerdom.
With this quick guide, you can be prepared for whatever life throws at you, or at your Sim.
What Is the Length of the Infant Age Span in the Sims 4?
The length of the Infant age span depends on your Lifespan settings. Each length will be listed below:
- Short Lifespan – 2.5 Sim days
- Medium Lifespan – 5 Sim days
- Long Lifespan – 20 Sim days
Upon reaching the end of this lifespan, the Infant will then become a Toddler. If you’d like to spend a bit more time with your Sim Infant, you can also turn off aging entirely in the Lifespan settings.

Do I Have To Wait for My Infant to Age Into a Toddler in The Sims 4?
No, you can always buy your infant a birthday cake to speed the process up. To age up an infant in The Sims, you need to follow these steps:
- First, you need to bake a birthday cake. To do this, click on a fridge or stove and select the Cook option. Choose any cake recipe from the list of dishes, and your Sim will start baking the cake.
- Once the cake is ready, place it on a table or countertop. Then click on the cake and select Add Birthday Candles. This option will cost you 10 Simoleons.
- Click on the cake again, select More Choices, and then choose Help Blow Out Candles. This will bring up a list of eligible Sims in your household who can help the infant blow out the candles.
- Select the infant you want to age up from the list, and then your Sim will pick them up and bring them to the cake.
- The infant will blow out the candles, and then you’ll be prompted to choose a trait for the child to gain as they age up.
- After selecting the trait, your infant will age up to a toddler, and you can start controlling them like any other Sim.
It’s worth noting that aging up an infant is irreversible, so make sure you’re ready for your little one to grow up before you bake the cake!
