Some Helldivers 2 Players Still Puzzled By the Unresolved Controversy

It’s been months since the infamous PSN controversy. During the whole fiasco, PlayStation demanded that everyone needed a PlayStation Network Account in order to keep playing the game. The problem was that a lot of countries simply do not have access to PSN. Those countries have been restricted from playing HD2 and after a tough couple of days, the PSN requirement has been lifted. It is all well and good for people who already purchased Helldivers 2, but gamers from restricted countries cannot purchase the game in any way. It all happened at the beginning of May 2024, and the issue is still unresolved.

Is Anything Being Done to Undo the Restriction

Unfortunately, there have been absolutely no advances in trying to get those restricted countries back into the fold. As you’d expect, the community is not all too happy with the results of this, arguably, one of the worst decisions in recent gaming history. One player, named Ramboozled on Reddit, started a thread discussing what can be done to make HD2 available for purchase in those countries once again.

Players Don’t Care Anymore

As it stands, the OP seems to be alone in this. Other players diss on the topic, saying that nothing can be done. Comments like: “Nothing! Next question!’, “Nothing will be done about it, over” are flooding the comment section, with “Stop pretending to care for internet points.” and “Ngl chief, I really don’t care at this point” taking the cake.

Other players try to give more sensible answers, with SpeedyAzi stating: “Sony doesn’t care. AH does but Sony owns IP. Sony dictates what can happen to said IP / product and where it is sold. Very undemocratic. Oh wait… that’s just Helldiver’s own satire being realised. There is no downside to allowing Steam version to be sold internationally and that part confuses me. PlayStation I understand, Steam restrictions make no sense and I think there is a case to be made there.”

“It’s All About the Money, Money, Money”

The generally accepted answer is that Sony does not do direct business with those countries, due to taxing or similar reasons, and that’s why it’s unprofitable for them to bother with it.

User wakito64 put it all together: “Sony decided that selling the game in those countries wouldn’t outweigh the taxes and left. It was always a lose-lose situation, we managed to keep the PSN requirements away but those countries permanently lost the ability to buy a Sony game on PC”. TheMadmanAndre added: “In the end it’s about money, and governments not getting their share.”

Things Were Not So Simple

In the end, the whole thing has blown over, and now it is too late to do anything. Many players claim that the outraged fans are the reason things are the way they are now, and that “simply making a PSN account” would’ve fixed the whole situation. However, things were not that simple. Sony stated that any PSN account made using a non-restricted country as a selected country runs the risk of getting banned. So, you could make a PSN account, using the closest Sony-supported country, but that could get you banned. There were no winners in that situation.

It is a sad reality that nothing can be done at this point and that players who claim they “don’t care” are predominantly from Sony-supported countries, so they had no reason to be invested in the first place. Giving a reality check to someone is totally fine, but we can all be a bit more understanding with our fellow gamers.
