Recently, Sony announced that in order to keep playing Helldivers 2, you have to link your Steam and PlayStation Network accounts. As you’d expect, the reactions are insane.
From the official release of Helldivers 2, you had the option to link your Steam and PSN accounts for security reasons. But it was just that, an option. But, on May 3, 2024, Sony announced that linking those two accounts will soon become mandatory, even if you have nothing to do with Sony or their console in any way. The community has not received this news in any positive way.
Players Disappointed, Especially Those In Non-Supported Countries
Linking those two accounts is far from complicated, but that is not the issue here. The main issue is that PSN is not available in many countries that have Helldivers 2 players in them. Another issue is that players are not willing to give their info to Sony, stating that a lot of security breaches have happened there. Moreover, an unofficial solution from Sony is to select another country, but you may get banned for false credentials.
Hundreds of posts about this have been created, where player express their outrage. One such post is made by EmbraceMonky who gives his detailed opinion on the matter, summarized: “TL;DR: PSN is not available worldwide, not even in all countries of the EU. Sony has the right to ban everyone who uses the wrong credentials.”
Others chime in, stating that this was the plan all along and the “grace period’ lasted this long so that players cannot ask for refunds. Like Shackram_MKII, who says: “This explains what the grace period was about, to avoid the possible hundreds of thousands of refunds from people that booted the game and couldn’t make a PSN account while the hype was high in the first months.“
Will Arrowhead Do Something to Prevent Losing Players
There is no official reply on this from the devs. A lot of players say that they will quit the game because of this. There is still no word on what will happen with people who don’t have a PSN account after the “timer” runs out.
We agree that this is quite a controversial decision, that probably helps no one. As OP mentioned, there are around 190 countries in the world and the PSN is supported on roughly 70 of them. The choices for players in non-supported countries are: 1) don’t make an account and play something else or 2) make an account with false credentials and risk getting your Helldivers 2 account banned.
We sincerely hope that Sony will do something to prevent the massive loss of Helldivers 2 players. Some players claim that devs announced that they will try to find a solution for non-supported countries, but we found no official info on that. If not, a lot of us will have to abandon the Galactic War.
