The long-expected Summer Update is here and Fortnite players are thrown aback by its size. This is the last update before Epic’s summer break, so the players expected it to be somewhat bigger. Now, the players are left confused, as some report the update is huge, while others downloaded a much smaller one.

Fortnite Players Shocked by a Massive Update

One player reported the size of the update was around 40GB. Nihilisim4all complained: “I mean come on, why does it have to be like this? Almost every week now they drop a +10 GB of update so they can add what? Like a duos mode in RELOAD? The game has exceeded from 27.3 GB on PC to almost 100 GB”.

Big-Amir, faced the same problem. They reported: “39GB for me, uninstalled it lol. Just updated 80GB at the Season launch. All of these cuz I have to download 10 other games with my Battle Royal”. Another user, mystireon, added: “The pain of having a single game that carries like 4 more inside”.

Other players also commented that downloading in Epic’s launcher is terribly slow. Players literally all over the world, including Spain, Australia, South Africa, and the US, reported experiencing this problem. Leo9991 suggested a possible solution. They said: “My download speed is usually 60 mb/s in the launcher, but sometimes when I download an update right when it comes out it’s slower than that”.

Summer Update Size Shouldn’t Matter, Right?

Many players reported downloading a much, much smaller update. The reported sizes ranged from 1,1GB to less than 3GB. ShutUpNowGrr said: “Weird, for me it was only 2.6GB. Maybe it’s redownloading things you don’t have installed like STW?”. It might be, that for some reason, the entire game is being re-downloaded.

One Redditor, ghostpickleonastick, suggested: “There is supposedly some way to reduce your overall download size when patching on PC. Console players typically have to re-download the entire game every time there’s an update”. Another player, arnecrafter, said: “Most of the time the update is much smaller, cancel the download and then resume again, it’s a bug. Should be much smaller.”

Infidel_sg offered another explanation on why this kept happening to players. They said: “The files downloaded during updates are compressed (to what degree depends on the game). Files are deleted and replaced/patched as needed, but you need space to download the update files first which will later be freed”.

It’s unusual that different Fortnite players faced such a big difference in the size of the Summer Update. If you are one of the players who stumbled upon a huge update, we suggest you try canceling the download and restarting it again. It might take some patience, but you’ll manage. And then you’ll be able to enjoy all the fun stuff the update brought. There are even some rumors about the Pirates of the Caribbean coming soon.
