In a May interview with game developers, it was made clear that the team at Square Enix wanted Final Fantasy 16 to be accessible to all players, both new and old. The new installment to the iconic action-fantasy series promises a rich narrative within the visually stunning world of Valisthea, where you will play as the protagonist, Clive Rosfield. While trailers for the game have showcased Clive’s skill as a swordsman, developers have implemented difficulty settings which allow you to take a bit of a back seat during combat.
Given these changes to the combat system, how do you access and set your difficulty in Final Fantasy 16? The process is fairly straightforward and it’s available from early on. Here’s how to change your difficulty setting in Final Fantasy 16.

How Do You Change the Difficulty Setting in Final Fantasy 16?
You can easily access and change your difficulty setting from the main menu in Final Fantasy 16. With your controller, simply open the menu and shift to your Settings Tab with either L2 or R2. Navigate to Game Settings in the second tab, where you can then toggle your Gameplay setting to either Action Focused or Story Focused. This will essentially act as the game’s difficulty setting.
Any changes you make will not permanently alter your gameplay experience, as you can always go back and change your setting as desired. While different from past Final Fantasy titles, this amendment is greatly appreciated given the changes to combat, which have eliminated previous turn-based systems.
What’s the Difference Between Action Focused and Story Focused in Final Fantasy 16?
The difficulty of your gameplay experience is affected by your Gameplay setting in Final Fantasy 16, including Action Focused and Story Focused settings. When toggled to Action Focused, you will essentially play on hard mode and go without items that would otherwise assist you in combat. This means you’ll need to master Clive’s moves and deal some combos to strike down your opponents if you choose to go this route.
On the other hand, the Story Focused setting will instead place combat on the backburner, relieving you of the heavy lifting. In this mode, Clive will have access to the Ring of Timely Evasion, the Ring of Timely Healing, the Ring of Timely Focus, and the Ring of Timely Strikes. Each can be found in your inventory under the Gear and Eikons tab.
Depending on the setting you choose, your gameplay experience will be affected accordingly. This was a conscious decision made by the team at Square Enix, as they wanted to allow players of varying skill levels to feel comfortable playing a game that can, at times, be heavily action-oriented. Fortunately, you’ll have the option to alternate between the two gameplay modes to uniquely curate your own play style in Final Fantasy 16, available on PS5 next week.
