Did Joshua Die in Final Fantasy XVI?
As you progress through the story of Final Fantasy 16, you are led to believe that Joshua has perished. Clive believes that it’s his fault that his younger brother died during Night of the Flames at Phoenix Gate. This is one of the driving motivations when Clive sets out on his journey. However, this is soon put into doubt, as there are hints that Joshua might not be dead.
After Cid joins Clive’s party, they hear rumors that a Fire Eikon Dominant has been seen. Thinking that’s Ifrit’s true master, Clive sets out to seek answers. The party looks for a mysterious person named only “Lord Margrace”.
The plot thickens because this person turns out to be none other than Joshua Rosfield, Clive’s lost brother, in disguise. While it’s proven that Joshua is alive beyond the shadow of a doubt, it’s unclear what are his objectives and motivations.

Even as Lord Margrace, Joshua still wields the power of the Phoenix. Moreover, his powers have grown since we last saw him. If we look back to mythology, the Phoenix has the power of rebirth, and this is where Joshua’s reappearance seems to originate from. Like a Phoenix, Joshua rose up from the ashes to live again.
Throughout the story, Joshua keeps appearing in the story, driving the plot and helping the team. He isn’t an outright ally to the party but is someone who helps them along the way.
