Elden Ring Fans Disappointed With the Lack of Lore in Shadow of the Erdtree

Elden Ring two characters by a campfire with a huge golden tree in the background

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is one of the most anticipated DLCs in recent gaming history. With hours and hours of extra content, fans everywhere wanted to know what monsters their Tarnished will tackle next, and in what direction the storyline will go next. With the title “Shadow of the Erdtree”, you’d expect some heavy lore to be involved. Unfortunately, the lack of lore concerning one pretty important part irks some fans.

Scadutree Is Surprisingly Lacking in Lore

What the fans all agree is that the Scadutree itself is quite lacking in lore. You’d expect that something so important (and technically a part of the game’s title) would have more explanations and available lore for players to find and explore. In one Reddit post on that subject, started by Helios-lune77, the players discuss the vague lore. User Mighty_No69 said: “The Scadutree and the Veil go so unaddressed, I don’t recall anybody even talking about them or any revealing item descriptions”.

Another user, jacksonattack, added: “I’ve given up on trying to make sense of any of the lore in this game that isn’t explicitly spelled out or tied together, and I’m fully convinced that they jammed in a bunch of plot points that they didn’t know what to do with…The base game felt like you were exploring a world that had rich history; the DLC feels like you’re trying to keep track of several cryptic plotlines all at once while getting lost in a maze.”

The Bowl Takes the Cake

Besides the Scadutree itself, the fan-favorite lore-lacking feature is definitely the large bowl you find at the base of the Scadutree. Right after you defeat Commander Gaius, you’ll pass through a gate where you find an empty area with an important-looking bowl. But, apart from some Scadutree Fragments nearby, there is nothing to explain what is that bowl or anything similar.

The most popular comment in the aforementioned thread is made by Finchypoo, who says: “How about that giant important looking bowl past Commander Gaius…..useless. That entire area was just to get some silly pants, and 5 scadoosh fragments.”

A lot of players claim that it is cut content, with it just being there with no purpose. On the other hand, 8bitzombi gave us a pretty good comment about all that: “I think that when they design big maps like this, artists and map designers add a lot of different interesting places where content could possibly go, so that way when the other designers start populating the map with enemies and quests they have a variety of options for where to put them. Just because an area looks like something should be there it doesn’t necessarily mean something specific was meant to be there.”

It very well may be a setup for future updates or the whole DLC. But, seeing that it took two years for FromSoftware to release Shadow of the Erdtree, it may take a while before we find out.
