In Diablo 4 you have many ways to damage your opponents. Thorns is a passive way of doing so and this article will explain what Thorns is and how it works in Diablo 4.
Diablo 4 offers you endless opportunities when making your builds. You probably came across the Thorns stat a couple of times and wondered what it is and how it works. You are not the only one, as we all lack a detailed explanation. With that in mind, here is what we know about Thorns in Diablo 4.
What is Thorns Damage?
In short, Thorns is the damage you “reflect” back on your enemies when they hit you. You will find the Thorns stat in the Offensive tab of your Character Screen. The damage you reflect is based on the percentage of the damage you take. The actual mathematics of this is still not revealed by Blizzard, but it’s safe to say that the more Thorns you have the better. Note that you need to be actually hit by an attack for the Thorns to work. So standing in pools of acid conjured by an enemy will not reflect it back. On the other hand, Thorns does work against ranged attacks. But how to best utilize it?

Best Ways to Use Thorns in Diablo 4
Since Thorns require you to be hit, it is best to be stacked on more beefier Classes. It is important to remember that it does not offer any damage reduction or a similar benefit by itself. With that in mind, more fragile Classes are not good candidates for Thorns, as they prefer not to be hit at all, and should instead invest in Armor, Life, and other defenses. The Classes that can use Thorns most effectively are Druid and Barbarian, being tanky Classes who don’t mind being hit. Necromancer can also benefit from Thorns as their minions gain the percentage of all of your stats, Thorns included. One of the perks in Book of the Dead even increases Thorns percentage from 33% to 50% on your minions.
