Ready to learn about Tempering in Diablo 4 Season 4? This article will explain all about it.

Season 4 of Diablo 4 brought many updates, reworks, and new mechanics to the game, and among them is Tempering. This new system gives players more control over upgrading gear and adding affixes. This means that players can create the perfect gear that can complement every playstyle imaginable. Furthermore, this new system makes upgrading gear feel more rewarding and endgame content more engaging and fun.

What is Tempering in Diablo 4 Season 4?

Tempering is a new item upgrade system that opens the possibility for players to take more control over their gear. Using Tempering, players can add new affixes to their items, making them fit a specific playstyle more easily. While the Occultist allows you to reroll one affix on an item, Tempering will add one new affix. Furthermore, Ancestral items have a bonus here, they can be Tempered with two new affixes instead of one.

How to Use Tempering

When visiting any Blacksmith in Diablo 4, players can choose the option to Temper their gear. Tempering Manuals are needed for this process, and players will have to acquire them first. Once Manuals are collected, by selecting a Tempering option, players can choose an item they wish to upgrade, which will show all available recipes for the specific item.

When selecting the recipe to use, the cost of Tempering will be presented in Gold and materials. If the price is accepted, the item will be Tempered and a new affix will be applied. Although the affix granted this way is selected randomly, it can be changed using a reroll offered by Tempered Durability. Most items have a durability of 5, and after they are spent, the last affix rolled will be permanent.

Tempering Manuals are items that can be looted across all of Diablo 4, from Bosses to Dungeons and Helltides. Once the Manual is learned, the affix will be added to the Tempered Recipes pool for later use. Tempering Manuals come in six categories that represent what item they are used for, all manuals are listed below:

  • Weapons – Weapons only
  • Offensive – Weapons, Amulets, Gloves and Rings
  • Defensive – Healms, Chest Armour, Pants, Shields, and Amulets
  • Utility – Healms, Chest Armour, Pants, Shields, Amulets, Gloves, and Boots
  • Mobility – Amulet and Boots
  • Resource – Amulets and Rings

Moreover, every manual offers stats to affixes in a specific range depending on their rarity. Power levels are Magic, Rare, and Legendary, and the range of stats offered scales accordingly. Once a Tempering Manual of a higher rarity is learned, it replaces the previous version.
