Dead Island 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2011 action-horror title, Dead Island. The new installment promises more of the chaos, gore, and combat that earned its predecessor acclaim, while introducing new zombies and in-game features.
The sequel takes place in the same hellish landscape that was once Los Angeles, where you’ll encounter a broad range of undead opponents varying in strength and ability. Of course, some zombies are easier to take down than others, but certain variants will require the combined use of stealth and skill to survive an attack.
Split into three sub-categories, including Infected Zombies, Variant Zombies, and Apex Zombies, here are the zombie types you’ll face off against in Dead Island 2.
Infected Zombies in Dead Island 2
In Dead Island 2, you’re bound to encounter more Infected Zombies than other zombie types. These undead foes include: Walkers, Runners, and Shamblers.
Walkers
While they aren’t particularly fast or strong, you’ll likely face off against more Walkers than other types of zombies. These zombies stick together in hordes, so taking them down can pose a challenge if you’re not prepared to take down multiple opponents.
Runners
As their name implies, Runners are exceptionally faster than other zombie types. This is because their bodies remain intact, for the most part, so you’ll have a tough time out-running them. Both aggressive and persistent, Runners need to be taken down before they’re given a chance to attack first.
Shamblers
While stronger than Walkers and Runners, Shamblers aren’t very fast. This is due to the fact that they were infected quite a while back, and the deterioration process has seriously set in. However, their strength shouldn’t be underestimated, as they’re capable of dealing a huge amount of damage if given an opening.

Variant Zombies in Dead Island 2
A wide variety of Variant Zombies can be found in Dead Island 2. These undead opponents are just like Infected Zombies, only they come equipped with secondary abilities.
Inferno Crushers
As you might have guessed, these zombies are on fire — literally. Not only that, but Inferno Crushers are also highly aggressive, charging their opponents when given the opportunity. Because they can’t be damaged with fire, you’ll need to get creative to take down these undead combatants.
Spiky Walkers and Runners
Both Spiky Walkers and Spiky Runners shield themselves with a variety of spiky objects and obstacles that will deal a huge amount of damage if you aren’t careful. Take them down before they equip these objects to avoid fighting a much tougher opponent.
Grenadier Walkers
These zombies are even stronger and faster than your standard Walkers and Runners. Not to mention, they’re also equipped with explosives, making them tricky to take down without taking damage. Because of this, it’s best to target from a distance.
Other Variant Zombies

Apex Zombies in Dead Island 2
Apex Zombies are the deadliest of zombies in Dead Island 2, capable of possessing secondary abilities much like Variant Zombies. More powerful than other types, Apex Zombies require exceptional skill to take them out.
Screamers
The strength of Screamers lies in their ability to disorient their targets with ear-splitting screams, which simultaneously attract undead allies. If you aren’t careful, you’ll quickly fall prey to these tricky combatants and their zombie armies. Plan your battle strategy carefully to avoid being taken unaware.
Crushers
Unsurprisingly, Crushers are the most physically powerful types of zombies you’ll encounter in Dead Island 2. While these zombies are slower than most others, they can deliver devastating blows if they manage to catch you. Approach them with extreme caution and aim for their arms.
Slobbers
Slobbers are pretty easy to spot, as they’re likely the most disgusting zombies you’ll find in the game. However, their abilities should not be underestimated, as these drooling opponents will target foes with their corrosive vomit. Taking Slobbers down will require a lot of patience and skill if you want to keep your flesh.
Expect to encounter these zombie types as well as bosses and more with the release of Dead Island 2 tomorrow.
