Baldur’s Gate 3 is a huge success in the world of gaming. It has won several awards and has become one of the best RPGs of late. But that does not mean that the devs have stopped working on it. Recently, we got a patch introducing some new Epilogue scenes, but that is not all. We got two new game modes: Custom Mode and Honor Mode. The latter is the talk of the town so let’s see what is Honor Mode in Baldur’s Gate 3.

What Is Honor Mode in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Honor Mode is the newest difficulty level, the hardest of them all. Something like “Hardcore Mode” other games have. That means you can’t just move the difficulty slider in the middle of the game, you have to start a whole new game in Honor Mode. In short, Honor Mode changes some things and prevents some exploits to make the experience harder and less forgiving. Let’s see what those changes are.

Changes in Honor Mode

Besides the expected changes to numbers, like enemies having more HP, modifiers to dice rolls, number of enemies, price adjustments, etc, we have some major changes that greatly influence the gameplay. Those are:

  • A single Save File
Since BG3 is based on dice-rolling, having multiple saves and constantly Loading the game until you get the result you want is the norm. Now, that is impossible. You’ll have to suffer the consequences of your actions and failures, you can’t just Load and try again.
  • Bosses have Legendary Actions
Legendary Actions is a mechanic from D&D 5e that gives certain monsters several actions that they may take, outside of their turn, like attacking or casting spells. BG3’s Honor Mode gives Legendary Actions to its bosses, to make them much more of a challenge. Once a certain trigger is activated, a boss will do something to make your life harder. Of course, Legendary Actions and what triggers them are unique to each boss.
  • Game Over on Party wipe
As with the “Hardcore Mode” of other games, if every member of your party is downed, you’re done. Game over. Load Game? Nope, the Save File is gone. That means you have to be extra careful with your playthrough. And since the modifiers and numbers have been tweaked (not to your advantage) every fight can be risky. Moreover, some bosses have gained the ability to practically insta-kill your party members so you have to play smart.
  • Action Economy Tweaks
Honor Mode description states that “Action economy rules and damage bonus rules are made stricter towards the end of the game”. This probably addresses the issue that, when you reach the end game, you can do so many things on your turn that the action economy just becomes irrelevant. This tones that down so you’ll have to think carefully for every fight.
