Should You Choose DirectX 11 or Vulkan API for Baldur’s Gate 3?
When you launch Baldur’s Gate 3 using the Larian Launcher, you’re presented with the choice to move forward with DirectX 11 or Vulkan. Those who aren’t all that familiar with their PC or these particular aspects are likely uncertain as to which Graphics API is the better option — or if the decision truly matters. However, it seems that Vulkan is going to be your best bet in most cases, according to a statement released by Larian Studios.
The development team clarifies that Vulkan, the newer of the two APIs, does remain somewhat less stable than its trusty predecessor, yet offers a potential increase in overall image quality. It’s fairly unlikely that those who boast a high-end PC build will notice any drops in graphics should they run into any issues with Vulkan, though the odds certainly go up if you’re working with lower-end specs.
With this in mind, Larian does recommend switching to DirectX 11 if you begin to experience noticeable decreases in graphics quality. If you’re unsure about your exact build, yourself, then DX11 remains a safe bet regardless of specs.
