Want to roll a Fighter? Read on to learn all about the Fighter subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is an award-winning RPG from Larian Studios. It draws heavily from its classic tabletop Dungeons & Dragons roots. And there is nothing more classic than a Fighter. Make it a Human Fighter and now you have the whole package. But, being a Fighter does not mean you are boring. Yes, other classes have lots of different abilities, spells, etc. But the game revolves around lots of fighting, and that’s what Fighters do best. It’s in the name. To flesh them out, there are three subclasses to choose from. Let’s see what those Fighter subclasses are in Baldur’s Gate 3 and what they all do.
Fighter Subclasses in Baldur’s Gate 3
Fighter is your standard front-line character. They are proficient in all Armor, both Simple and Martial weapons and Shields. Basically, whatever you may find, a Fighter can use it. When created, a Fighter chooses one Fighting Style (Archery, Defence, Duelling, Great Weapon Fighting, Protection, or Two-Weapon Fighting) and has the ability to heal himself with Second Wind. At the second level a Fighter gains access to the powerful Action Surge, an ability that gives him a whole new action. At Level 3, you choose a subclass: Champion, Eldritch Knight, or Battle Master.
Champion
The Champion is a pretty straightforward subclass. It does not gain any active abilities, rather, all its improvements are passive. As a Champion, you get the Improved Critical Hit feature that reduces the required dice roll needed to score a Critical Hit (usually, this means you will crit on a roll of 19 and 20, not just on 20). Later, you get increased jump distance and a bonus to all physical (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution) checks you are required to make that you are not proficient in. Lastly, at Level 10, you choose another Fighting Style.
This is a great subclass if you don’t want to bother with lots of abilities and just want to get into the thick of it. Note that the improvements for crits do stack, so a Champion can be a lean mean critting machine.
Eldritch Knight
This is a subclass for all those who love spellcasting in Heavy armor. Eldritch Knight gives the Fighter some spellcasting, while still doing what Fighter does best. You gain access to a limited Spell list (from Wizard’s spells), up to Level 2 Spells. You also gain some abilities to combine fighting with magic, like War Magic (you can attack after casting a Cantrip) or Eldritch Strike (when you hit a creature, it has a Disadvantage to resist a Spell you cast on it on the next turn).
Controversially, this subclass is not for casting Fireballs around. This subclass excels in buffing itself up or debuffing a strong opponent before engaging. Enemies are far away? Cast Longstrider or Expedicious Retreat. Are you about to get attacked from multiple sides or shot with Magic Missiles? Cast Shield. Got yourself surrounded? Cast Thunderwave. Facing a powerful opponent? Cast Blindness, Ray of Enfeeblement, Hold Person, or anything up that alley. Hit them with an Eldritch Strike before that and you can disable even the most powerful enemies.
Battle Master
An opposite of Champion, this is a subclass that gets even more options in a fight. It focuses on Manoeuvres, a special type of attack that each does something special, usually in addition to dealing damage. You get to choose what Manoeuvres you want, and there are 14 of them to choose from:
- Commander’s Strike
- Disarming Attack
- Distracting Strike
- Evasive Footwork
- Feinting Attack
- Goading Attack
- Manoeuvring Attack
- Menacing Attack
- Precision Attack
- Pushing Attack
- Rally
- Riposte
- Sweeping Attack
- Trip Attack
You pick three Manoeuvres at Level 3, two more at Level 7, and the last two at Level 11. The use of these abilities is not unlimited. You need to expend special Superiority Dice to use them. You get four of those at Level 3, and one more at Level 7.
This is the most popular subclass for its sheer versatility. If played correctly, you can easily dominate the battlefield.
