Are monsters in Ad Infinitum giving you a hard time? Find out how to beat, outwit, and avoid them, and ultimately emerge victorious.
Ad Infinitum is a psychological horror game, published by Nacon and developed by Hekate, in which you take on the role of a German soldier in World War I. Facing adversity of war, family tragedy, trauma, and much more, you are tasked to solve puzzles and uncover secrets while avoiding monsters that seek to plunge you back into darkness and terror. Each monster in Ad Infinitum represents a horrific facet of war, split into minor and major horrors. Every one of them is thematically connected to war itself, with the major monsters lending their names to the game’s chapters themselves. If you’re having trouble facing them, our guide will explain how to best them in your efforts to reach the end of the game.
How to Beat the Minor Monsters in Ad Infinitum
The Hunger
The Hunger are the first real monsters you’ll encounter in the game. Pale, gaunt, and stooped over, they scour the trenches and no-mans-land looking for anything to feast on. You will usually see them feeding on the corpses of dead soldiers.
The Hunger are blind, sensing their way through smell, touch, and most importantly, hearing. In fact, they use the palms of their spindly arms to “hear”. Facing them head-on is deadly, so you have to be as quiet as possible to avoid them. Use sounds to draw them away, then head to the other direction.
The Rage
The Rage is a towering quadrupedal monstrosity made up of fused corpses of soldiers, topped with a flaming cerberus-like trio of canine skulls. You will encounter it in the narrow trenches, which makes it difficult to manoeuvre and avoid it.
It attacks by charging thoughtlessly forward, trampling anything in its way. The only way to beat it is to avoid it by hiding in foxhole nooks built into the trench walls. The trenches where The Rage lurks have many vents of poison gas, so make sure to have a Gas Mask handy to be able to navigate them safely.
The Mayhem
The Mayhem are puppet-like disfigured soldiers fitted with ghastly prostheses. They represent the wounded soldiers who have been healed just enough to be sent back out to the front. They chitter and screech, so you can tell where they are coming from.
The Mayhem can only operate in the darkness, moving when you can’t see them. If you point the light at them, they momentarily freeze. In essence, they follow the Weeping Angels rules. You will have to move from light pool to light pool while using your wind-up flashlight to navigate the claustrophobic darkness in between.
How to Beat the Major Monsters in Ad Infinitum
Despair
Despair is the first major monster players will have to face, and likely the creepiest. She represents the despair of those broken by war, the mourning mothers and unassailable grief. For most of your initial encounters with her, all you can do is run the gauntlets through the trenches and battlefields to avoid her as she gives frantic chase.
For the boss encounter with Despair, you will have to navigate the arena while she chases you, using the sound poles to scare her off with music and lights. She starts weeping when close to them, so use the distraction to find the four music players. Activating all four music players around the arena will make Despair stop enough for you to approach and pull the dagger from her heart.
Corruption
Corruption is the second major monster you will have to face, an ironbound monstrosity of plates and spikes resting on its throne. It represents the greed of war profiteers, and the propaganda machine used to send men to die for them.
After pulling the large lever at the base of its throne, Corruption will rise up and start lumbering after you. It’s slow but don’t let that fool you, because iron fences will rise and fall from the floor in a random pattern, making it difficult to avoid its attacks. To defeat it, you have to fully turn four valves in the four corners of the room. Note that you can stop and resume turning if the monster gets too close. After you’ve turned all four valves, the central mechanism will become active. Push the green button to defeat the boss.
Pain
Pain is the third and final boss that you’ll encounter after freeing it from its cage of barbed wire. It’s a deformed winged monster that represents the collective pain and trauma of the soldiers fighting on the front lines.
Upon first encountering it, the Officer will provide you with a gun that you can use to drive it away. Upon reaching the boss battle with it, you won’t have the gun any more. Instead, Pain will begin flying about with the spotlight trying to pinpoint its location. It will then periodically dive to attack you, and you’ll have to use the Space bar to duck and fight it off. Meanwhile, search through the arena for the four levers to lower the cages. You’ll have to cut through barbed wire to get to them, all while fending off Pain. When the last cage has been lowered, Pain will swoop for a final attack. Fight it off one more time before it perishes.
