What Is A Game Console? What Defines It?
[Generation Eight] Recently the world has been set ablaze by rumors that Valve is preparing Steam-based gaming hardware to bring PC gaming to a larger demographic. There have been many different opinions about what this project will look like, if and how it could compete against consoles, and whether or not it should even be called a game console at all.
In a recent opinion piece, I shared my personal belief that this shouldn’t be treated as a ‘game console’, because it really isn’t. On the risk of sounding like a flake and/or hypocrite, I must say I am only partly right in not calling it a game console. The reason I went down this route when writing the article was to distinguish the big difference between what a Steam system might look like compared to a traditional console. So what is the key difference, at least from my point of view?
