Piracy has been around for centuries. Long ago, it was used to describe unlawful sailors who plundered ships and ports and abided by no rules but their own. Now, the term has evolved to fit the current day and age. Since high Naval patrols have stamped out classic pirating, today’s pirates have adapted to the biggest information flow in the world: the internet. Now, pirates loot software and information rather than gold, and every digital industry from music to bookstores have tried to stamp it out in some way. The Video Game industry has been trying especially hard to fight online piracy as of late through means of Digital Rights Management software implemented into the games, but their efforts have not only failed, they have ended up punishing their paying customers while at the same time fanning the flames of the problem and actually increasing piracy.
