Pat Floyd writes: "Every response to a videogame player's input acts according to the rules (a.k.a. the videogame's code). Even if the developer failed to anticipate a particular player action, the rules governing that action are in place and they cannot be broken. Players can't make the game do something it wasn't programmed to do. When dealing with glitches — which is really just a buzzword for an unplanned videogame mechanic — the game will predictably punish or reward the player based on how the code is written. I'll talk about hackers in a moment; for now, don't think of them as "players". The point is that a videogame's rules are fixed."
