With less than a day left until launch, we’re finally nearing the April 21 release for Dead Island 2. Following in the footsteps of its acclaimed predecessor, Dead Island, the new title is also set in an apocalyptic, zombie-infested Los Angeles, where players will become the ultimate zombie slayer.
After spending nearly a decade in development following its initial announcement in 2014, Dead Island 2 has raised some questions. While the new action-horror RPG does feature modern upgrades like Alexa voice commands, similarities between Dead Island 2 and the previous installment have drawn into question whether the new title is a sequel or a remake.
All things considered, is Dead Island 2 a remake of the original Dead Island? We got our answer in a recent interview between game developers and The Loadout.
Is Dead Island 2 a Remake of Dead Island?
Simply put, no, Dead Island 2 is not a remake. Despite its return to Hell-A after nearly a decade in development, the new title is a true sequel to 2011’s Dead Island.
In fact, The Loadout’s recent interview with Dead Island 2 game developers revealed that the team at Dambuster Studios made a conscious decision to continue the series with the new sequel rather than remake the original. James Worrall, the creative director for Dead Island 2, went on to say that a Dead Island remake “might be a mistake” and “it’s best to leave it where it was.”

While we’ve seen other franchises within the horror genre reboot older games with great success, it appears that a decision like this just isn’t in the cards for the Dead Island series. We’ve seen excellent remakes like Resident Evil 4, which launched just last month, but it’s undeniably refreshing to see an all-new title added to a genre that often seems hell-bent on remastering old material.
