You’ve hopped your way through the level, avoided fireballs and eaten funky mushrooms.
You’ve risked life and limb to do what any other Italian plumber would do: beat the boss and save the princess.
And then the mushrooms start talking to you: mocking you and making you feel small.
You start to feel sick and need to lie down.
My theory about Mario Bros being an analogy for drug addiction aside, there is a point to all this: ‘Our princess is in another castle.’
It’s the Mushroom Kingdom equivalent of the dog laughing in Duck Hunt; the ‘screw you’ that ties each world together. There are few phrases in gaming that are as recognisable as this… it is the root of every game’s story over the last 20 years…"
