Jolt Review: Zubo
Jolt.co: "Electronic Arts may be under-selling Zubo somewhat by marketing it mainly towards pre-teens. There are the makings of a surprisingly decent game here, combining RPG elements with rhythm-based battles. Even the core concept of collecting cute and zany little creatures to fight your battles is one that has been tried and tested on adults.
The creatures in question are the Zubos, and basically you have to help them fight the Zombos, a clone army of near-identical evil twins. If these diminutive big-headed send-ups of everything from punk rockers to cowboys left you in any doubt of the style of humour in the game, the combat won’t. With moves that range from straight-up kicks and punches to noxious farts and booby-trapped presents, there’s a level of puerility to make even grown-ups giggle just a little bit.
The game is divided between some simple exploration and the turn-based battles in which you can field up to three of your Zubos (there are 55 to collect in total) against up to three enemy Zombos. Each Zubo/Zombo can be a fighter, a performer or a defender, and each archetype has an advantage over the next a la rock-paper-scissors as well as varying specialisations towards damage, healing and protection."
