Are Horror Games Still Effective?

Horror has been one of the most beloved genres of entertainment media from the start, and video games are no exception to this. But, nearly 35 years after what is arguably the first horror game released, is there still hope for the genre to grow and press on? Or, are we facing the cookie cutter days of old?
