I didn’t realise at the time but Shadow Complex actually ties in to an Orson Scott Card trilogy of books, which is pretty cool in its own right, and as a side-story to a much larger picture Shadow Complex really finds a place to flourish. As a standalone chapter it’s nothing overly thrilling, but complimentary cross-media storytelling always brings a smile to my face. Gameplay: It’s in its chunky gameplay that Shadow Complex (and its Remaster) really start to shine. Thrust into a pretty deadly base full of lethal robots and satisfyingly stupid guards, Jason has to delve deeper and deeper into the facility to find his girlfriend, stop a war and escape with both their lives. It’s a 2.5D Metroidvania title, meaning you’ll be focusing on exploring every inch of the base looking for secrets, pickups and new gear that allows access to previously sealed off areas. It’s a heady mix that has formed the basis for one of my favourite genres, and even amongst many venerated classics Shadow Complex stands tall. I came away from the original thoroughly impressed at its smartly designed map and really interesting gadgets.
