From Cinelinx:

Sicario revels in its Arizonan bleach blond to Juarez saturated grotesquerie and, ostensibly, it vexes over that western attributed violence. It attempts a level of verisimilitude by turning its attention to a floor drain in the midst of torture. Or sometimes the camera, like its supposed protagonist Kate Macer(Emily Blunt), will snail behind the action only to witness the bloodied aftermath. But just as often, Deakins and Villeneuve can’t help but gaze directly into the paroxysm, and therein lies the film's actual animus. Just look at the way it lingers on Del Toro in deadly repose or the way its screenplay abandons its 'protagonist' for one last excursion into hell.
