Most big name developers in the game industry tend to be tied to large publishers. Miyamoto is and will always be with Nintendo. Dave Jaffe is Sony. Will Wright is EA. Sometimes big shifts occur, like when Microsoft buys Lionhead and suddenly Molyneux has a consistent publisher, but it’s pretty rare for a developer to establish a name for himself while remaining independent.
Then there’s Jeff Minter, who gained quite a bit of recognition for making one of the few great Jaguar games and since has bounced around publishers with various Tempest games and light-synthesizer programs (as well as the Lionhead-overseen Unity, which never finished development).
