Last decade, the first-person shooter genre typically fell into two categories: Futuristic sci-fi or World War II.

In the first category, we had the the reigning rivals of Unreal Tournament and Quake III Arena, while in the latter category there was Call of Duty and Battlefield 1942. For FPS fans, outside of occasional errant titles like Valve Software’s Half-Life, these were your choices.

This changed when Infinity Ward jumped to the modern era of combat with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in 2007. Modern Warfare became an instant hit and set the tone for first-person shooters moving forward. For seven years, the genre focused predominantly on buzzwords like “real-world warfare,” “iron sights,” and “keeping your feet on the ground.” The situations remained fantastic, but the weapons and movement felt grounded in the real world. Gone were the days of flying through the air with fantastic guns.

What will come next for the classic FPS genre?
