For the most part, they are overhead action role playing games that require you to traverse a dungeon, defeat countless enemies, gather untold treasures and survive to a predetermined depth. Occasionally though, Rogue games are different- Minecraft could, at its base, be considered a Rogue game. Minutequest is a rogue game but it is viewed from the side, 2D side scrolling, but retains the action role playing elements that the genre is known for."
